    Whiplash – Unborn Again (2009)

    When I first got this promo I thought it was a joke since this band has been ‘dead’ for over 10 years, but after doing some research I found out that in fact is the ‘original’ Whiplash from New Jersey.

    I must say that I have very mixed feeling about “Unborn Again”, since I think the release is perfectly timed with the current ‘revival’ of the whole Trash Metal sound, but it fails to deliver in some aspects that I will discuss in the next few paragraphs.

    My Own Grave – Necrology (2009)

    My Own Grave hails from Sweden and “Necrology” marks the band’s second full length release. The band plays a melodic mix of Trash and Death Metal and they are pretty average at it.

    “Necrology”,in the same tradition that bands of this style have, features 11 songs and only 33 minutes of music. The band is pretty good at combining both genres, but it’s fairly generic when it comes to writing songs.

    Vader – Necropolis (2009)

    When it comes to bands playing Death/Trash Metal in these days, my band of choice has always been Vader. They have managed to release very solid albums since 1993, and while not extremely ‘different’ from each other, they are still pretty brutal and melodic at the same time.

    The only problem I’ve had with Vader over the years is that when I see them live, they are always sub-par compared to their albums. The production on the albums makes their music sound better, or they are just stuck with a shitty sound engineer when playing live, since I’ve seen them several times over the years and I’m always dissatisfied with their live sets.

    Ethereal Collapse – Breaching The Citadel (2006)

    When I first received this band’s ‘promo’ package with a burned CD-R and a hand written information sheet, I was about to discard this release instantly since I have not received something like this in several years. However I decided to play the CD on my car on the way to a party one night and I was blown away because of what I heard.

    I was almost not able to get out of the car in order to finish listening to the brilliant mix of Melodic Death Metal and Trash Metal that this band has managed to put on their first full-length album. The music was that good, since it’s a perfect balance of both genres and it’s completely unpredictable.

    Ethereal Collapse – Categories (2008)

    Recorded two years after their great debut full-length “Breaching The Citadel” was released, Ethereal Collapse is back with “Categories” a 3 song EP that takes off where their last album left.

    And if you have not read the review of their full-length album, then I’ll give you the jist of it: the album kicks ass, plain and simple. The band’s second effort is pretty good, but it’s probably lost the WOW factor since after listening to the first you have very high expectations of whatever the band releases next.

    Nervecell – Preaching Venom (2009)

    Lifeforce Records brings us “Preaching Venom” from the UAE based band Nervecell, the band plays Death/Trash metal with some melodic elements. While none of the band members are nationals of UAE, Dubai more specifically, they all reside there and make their music in that corner of the world.

    Nervecell’s features David Haley of Psycroptic fame on drums, and as you can expect the drumming in this album is close to perfection; all tracks are tightly played and brilliantly written and executed. The other 3 musicians from the band as I can tell do not play in any other bands in the scene, but they are still pretty good at their instruments.

    Impiety – Terroreign: Apocalyptic Armageddon Command (2009)

    The Trashy Death/Black Metal trio of Singapore is back with their sixth full length album that brings back their old school sound. Since the first track this album is very fast paced and intense, something that I was not expecting from this band.

    Impiety’s only founding member is their guitarist and vocalist: Shyaithan. He is the driving force behind the band’s almost 20 year trajectory and their old school sound that is desperately needed these days.

    Onslaught - Live Damnation (2009)

    “Live Damnation” is the latest offering from British Trash Metal legends Onslaught. We usually don’t review live albums since they do not usually feature new material, but we will talk about the recording sound, what’s on it, and such things.

    After releasing a so so album back in 2007, the band has been touring extensively so they decided to release a live album. “Live Damnation” features 8 tracks of old school Trash Metal that brings back those glory days.

    Susperia – Attitude (2009)

    Susperia has come a long way since their earlier days of being a Black Metal band, then shifting to some kind of Black/Trash Metal, and now they are 100% modern Trash Metal.

    “Attitude” is the fifth album for this Norwegian band that features Cyrus and Memnock both ex-Old Mans Child and and Tjodalv ex-Dimmu Borgir. Boasting this impressive lineup the band’s sound transformation top it’s current state has been pretty interesting and hard to understand for some people, specially for the fans of their harder earlier stuff.

    Blood Tsunami - Grand Feast For Vultures (2009)

    Blood Tsunami is a 4 man Norwegian band that features Faust, of Emperor fame, on drums. The sound of the band can be said it’s Melodic Trash Metal, but with Death and Black Metal style vocals.

    The sound of the band is very dynamic and never gets dull, all riffs in the songs are greatly written and it truly showcases the bands talents, especially since “Grand Feast For Vultures” is the band’s 2nd full length release.
