  • Blaze of Sorrow – El Eremita del Fuoco (2015)

    cover

Being one of the finest Atmospheric Black Metal bands in the scene, Blaze of Sorrow returns with yet another excellent release with “El Eremita del Fuoco”. Filled with brilliant melodic passages, this album reminds us of the earlier Alcest stuff mixed with some older Agalloch as well. Clocking in at around 40 minutes, this is one of the best releases of the genre in 2015.

Opening with the ethereal “La Conquista del Cielo”, the band sets a very melancholic mood early in this release. Featuring very subtle atmospheric elements and bleak soundscapes, the track nicely explodes into BM riffs that are more melodic than aggressive. Continuing strong, “La Madre” is a bit more aggressive and playful with very well defined drum patterns and headbanging passages.

  • A Sickness unto Death – The Great Escape (2015)

    cover

Hailing from Germany, today we have Doomsters A Sickness unto Death and their sophomore release “The Great Escape”. While typical Epic Doom Metal gets pretty boring after 20 minutes or so, this band delivers over 60 minutes of very creative music that while staying true to the genre, manages to incorporate unique elements to keep things fresh and engaging.

Opening with the album title track, we are treated to heavy distorted guitars and repetitive riffs that are quite enjoyable. Tim Ziegeler’s vocals are more on the Epic Doom side with a splash of ICS Vortex making them quite enjoyable and not tiring at all. The riffing at times is a bit less heavy than your typical Doom release, making for some crafty an interesting tracks like the melodramatic “Lost” and October Tide-esque “The Uniqueness of the Two”.

  • Selbst – An Omnious Landscape (2015)

    cover

Always psyched to receive music from Romania’s Sun & Moon Records, today we have Venezuela Black Metal battalion Selbst. This soul crushing mCD release is truly a punishing exercise in BM execution, filled with over 22 minutes of ravaging music that will keep you to the edge of your seat. Expertly crafting an oppressive atmosphere, this is one release that will haunt you for months.

Opening with the relentless “An Omnious Landscape”, this two-man outfit delivers waves after waves of pummeling riffs and hyper-fast drums. There is really no moment to relax in this bestial track that crafts a very dense and crushing atmosphere with only traditional elements. The brutality continues with the imposing “Heterodox Reason”. This track reminds us of a mixture of Gorgoroth and Horna, but with a distinct signature style that has Selbst written all over it.

  • Leather Nun America – Buddha Knievel (2015)

    cover

Hailing from San Diego, CA, this Stoner/Doom Metal outfit return with another pummeling full-length release titled “Buddha Knievel”. Invoking the likes of EyeHateGod, Crowbar mixed with Pentagram’s vibe, this band delivers eleven tracks of solid music that will satisfy any fan of the genre and will further propagate the power of the riff.

After the trippy prologue, the band presents their full-on Stoner Doom elements in the warm up “Into the Abyss”. The band’s sound is quite organic and natural, with the clean vocals working perfectly well with the nature and pace of their music. Getting fully into the groove, “Warwolf” has that warm and fuzzy vibe of old-school Doom thanks to the pulsating riffs. The melancholic clean passages offer very cool guitar leads and nice instrumentation to change the tempo of the song a few times.

  • Swampborn – Alleged Escape (2014)

    cover

Hailing from Russia, today we have two-man battalion Swampborn and their very promising debut EP “Alleged Escape”. Crafting over 25 minutes of very fresh sounding Black Metal with tons of melodic and experimental passages, the band manages to catch the attention of the listener from the first note to the last one. If you like less straightforward and more complex Black Metal, this is one release that you don’t want to miss out on.

Opening with the 10-minute epic “Augoeides”, the band sets a very mellow Post-Rock-ish vibe early on and suddenly transitions into more melodic BM territories. The music is quite well crafted and very engaging, allowing the killer riffs and tight drums to carry the track. We particularly enjoy when they go out of ‘script’ and deliver lush instrumental or melodic passages mid song.

  • Chordewa - Recast Gear for the Mindcraft Course (2014)

    cover

Constantly scouring the planet for the best Metal, it is very exciting for us to find hidden gems like Moldavian Progressive/Avant-garde Black Metal outfit Chordewa and their debut full-length release “Recast Gear for the Mindcraft Course”. Featuring a very futuristic theme and sound, the band delivers 36 minutes of brilliant music that reminds us of acts like Arcturus and Vulture Industries.

The album starts with the funky tempo changes of “Psyche in the Shell”, a great intro to the band’s deranged musical brains filled with lush keyboards and intricate drum patterns. The Artcurus worshiping “Mindcraft Course” brilliantly shows even a more aggressive and faster side of the band as this track merges from familiar to fully represent the weirdness of Chordewa’s sound with its Proggy undertones. The playful “The Spiral” is one of our favorite songs thanks to its ritualistic percussions section and how the band swings the direction of the song’s mood very drastically.

  • Cyahares – Whores of Babylon (2014)

    cover

Perfectly blending Middle Eastern influences into crushing Death Metal, today we have Cyahares and ‘their’ full-length release “Whores of Babylon”. This one-man battalion delivers blistering riffs and furious drumming thought eight brilliant tracks. If you like extreme brutality, melodic/folky parts and a great production, this is one album that you don’t want to miss.

Fully exploding in the listener’s face since the opener “Thy Winds in Coordinations of My Sand Status”, Cyahares delivers waves of crushing riffs, hyper fast drums and relentless growls. The overall combination of brutal elements is pretty awesome and commands instant attention. In a similar fashion than Nile, tracks like “Temples of Fire” and “Shahnameh” perfectly blend the Middle Eastern influences into the mix, allowing the music to be both dominant and crafty.

  • Kvltist – Catechesis (2015)

    cover

Hailing from Germany today we have two-man battalion Kvltist and their demolishing release “Catechesis”. Serving the dark lord, this band sets forth with seven tracks of soul crushing Black Metal. With tons of solid Black Metal releases in 2015, this outfit manages to standout with powerful songs filled with atmospheric decadence, making it a very solid effort.

Opening with the blistering “The Devil’s Catechumen”, the high-octane drumming and demoralizing riffing instantly pummels through your ear drums. This band reminds us of a mixture of Inquisition, Gorgoroth and some Nightbringer, thanks to demoralizing tracks like “Devotion”, “Darkest Light from Glaring Shadows” and the melodically sinister “Eucharisty of Death Divine”. The band does a great job in creating a very dark mood thanks to countless crafty riffs and exceptional tempo changes.

  • Leave Scars – Chain of Redemption (2015)

    cover

Hailing from Belgium, today we have Leave Scars and their sophomore release “Chain of Redemption”. As with many Thrash Metal bands, this outfit has only released two albums in the decade the band has been together, and luckily for us, the eleven tracks presented here are quite polished and well crafted.

Opening with the in-your-face riffage of “P.B.D”, the band sets quite a solid bar with a very melodic and fast-paced song. Evoking old-school Destruction and Exodus, the band plows through killer tracks like “Final Chance”, “The Faceless” and the anthem “Chains”. This last track suddenly busts out a melodic passage that completely elevates it to a whole other dimension. The vocals in this release are quite diverse as the swing between old-school Dave Mustaine (minus the whiny parts) to more mainstream Modern Metal and swing back into typical Thrash-styled screams.

  • Wreckmeister Harmonies – Night of Your Ascension (2015)

    cover

Featuring over 30 musicians ranging from members of Yakuza to The Body, Wreckmester Harmonies is the brainchild of J.R. Robinson. Mixing elements of Drone, Doom, Post-Metal, and ambient into one very dense wall of sound, the collective creates haunting music that goes beyond just making crushing and punishing tracks. In this release we are presented with two monumental tracks that combined clock in around 48 minutes of sheer darkness and emotion.

Leading the charge we have the opening 32-minute behemoth “Night of Your Ascension” which starts in a very ethereal way. The bone-chilling female angelic voices slowly lead into compelling string instrument arrangements just before it all turns completely somber with some punishing Doom riffs. This transition is handled in a very masterful way, as the tension is slowly rising. The heavier side of this track is filled with punishing riffs and some hellish screams that create a sense of urgency due to their aggressive nature.
