Deep Desolation – Subliminal Visions (2011)

cover

All the way from Poland today we have Deep Desolation and their crushing debut full-length release “Subliminal Visions”. Mixing Black, Death and Doom Metal the band manages to pull it off graciously with a monumental sound and very well crafted songs.

We have to admit that whenever we get something labeled Black/Doom metal, it usually sucks and it’s a pain in the ass to review since we have to listen to the full CD at least 3 times. With “Subliminal Visions” it was very relieving that we actually enjoyed the CD on the first spin and we ended up loving it the next few times. The band’s take on the genre mixing comes from an aggressive perspective rather than drowning the listener with slow Doom riffs and Black Metal snarls that will make you start snoring.

Opening with “Call of the Abyss”, the band sets a mid-tempo pace with crushing riffs and diabolical vocals. These vocals are nice sounding Black/Death growl/shriek that is very brutal and never gets old. The song goes back and forth with speed ups and has some nice solos at the end of it. The rhythm on the next track “Murderous Lust” is a bit more up beat and things are equally aggressive. Here you can start to notice the band’s limited riffing potential, but as long as they are catchy and effective who cares.

Few more songs swing by and we reach the 11 minute epic called “Christ’s Incest”. In this song the band goes a bit ‘doomier’ on things but the constant tempo changes makes this song an interesting one and not dull at all. We love the guitar work near the end of this crushing song and this by far makes it our favorite song of this release.

“Subliminal Visions” closes down with the very catchy and melodic “Everlasting War” track. In this track the band explores the Black Metal snarl with a Melodic DM/Doom song structure and pulls it of very nicely. For such a young band, we are very impressed with the quality of this and all the previous songs.

We can only expect better things from this band in the future, and if the last few tracks are any indication of where their sound is taking them, we will be paying close attention to this band. If you are looking for a different release that is both aggressive and nicely crafted, go to the band’s website and buy this release.
