Unleashing one of the most explosive and expansive Atmospheric Black Metal releases of the last few years, today we have Antrisch and their sophomore full-length release “Expedition III: Renitenzpfad”. Clocking in at nearly 50-minutes of music, this release creates a very thick and tense atmosphere that is benefitted with sprinkles of Doom/Ambient/Djent elements around a fierce and punishing Black Metal core.

Opening with the mysterious “I. Prolog - Conquista”, the band creates a very cinematic experience that quickly escalates with Maurice Wilson’s fierce shrieks and the band’s superbly crafty guitar work. The album’s lyrical narrative focuses on Pedro de Ursúa's Amazon expedition of 1560, delivering a very unique and powerful cinematic experience. Particularly, the mixture of passages in both Spanish and German, creates a very immersive and unique experience throughout the release.

Tracks like “II. Hidalgo infernal - Der baskische Wolf”, “III. Los Marañones I Nattern & Narren”, and “IV. Los Marañones II Bittergrün”, blend masterful atmospheric with Eisregen-esque aggressive onslaughts, creating a very unique and powerful atmosphere. The fierce guitar riffing interweaves between blistering Black Metal riffs, to more restrained and crafty Doomy/Djenty passages. While hard to imagine from just reading it, the band’s ability to blend styles and moods is pretty outstanding, with eerie songs like “V. Abkehr - Non sufficit orbis” filled with unique details that you will not fully discover until you listen to this release more than a few dozen times.

As a whole, “Expedition III: Renitenzpfad” is a very dense release filled with intricacies that take quite a few spins to unravel. It has been a while that we had to really leave everything else we are doing to fully focus on one release, but Antrisch rewards the listener’s patience and attention with a very unique take on the genre. If you are looking for something to really sink your teeth and ears into, this is one of those albums that grows on the listener the more it is played.
