Delivering one of the most Atmospheric Doom Metal releases ever produced, today we have Spain’s Todomal and their third full-length release “Graveyards of Joy”. Very aptly titled, this release features a very powerful and uplifting found, creating a very epic and dramatic vibe. With the usual influences from bands like Candlemass, Anathema, Katatonia, there are also some Pink Floyd-esque elements that give this outfit a completely unique and very regal sound.

Making a statement with the dreamy opener “Mare Ignis”, Mile and Wildman create a very powerful and moving vibe with soaring vocal arrangements and piercing atmospherics. Being huge fans of Doom Metal, this is certainly a very unique approach to the genre, creating some truly regal and powerful atmospheres that are intoxicating, as “Lucid Nightmare”, “Point of Coalescence" and “Misericordiah” fill the air. The band’s Doom side is also worth noting, with crushing riffs and very moody atmospherics.

Our favorite track in this release has to be the dramatic “Deliverance”, which features bleak acoustic guitars, alongside moody atmospherics. The vocal arrangements in this release are top notch, particularly with recording members Wildman, Mile, and Cecilia providing vocals alongside invited vocals of guests Teodora Gosheva and Cecilia Tallo. While traditional Doom Metal vocals usually tend to become overbearing and too repetitive in these releases, Todomal has managed to deviate from the norm due to the diversity of vocals they present. One of the bands that got closer to this is probably While Heaven Wept back in the day.

As the release closes with the lush “Humanised Gods” and the pummeling Doominess of the album title track, Todomal manages to innovate and reinvigorate a genre that usually does not change much. With “Graveyards of Joy”, the band continues to polish their sound and creates a very unique amalgamation of influences and elements into a cohesive and powerful atmospheric beast. If you are a Doom Metal fan, and like epic melodies that are both bleak and uplifting at the same time, do not miss out on this release.
