Featuring a captivating and gritty lo-fi production, today we have Blood and Sun’s full-length return “Aion’s Light”. Captured in a four-track recorder, it does not get more bare-bones than this. However, the release masterfully showcases melancholy and lush creativity, alongside Luke Tromiczak’s enthralling vocals. If you are looking for something along the lines of Rome, Of the Wand and the Moon, and King Dude, you are in the right place.

Opening with the lush album title track, we get a very expansive start with powerful guitar strumming alongside deep and hypnotic vocals. This opener sets a very raw and powerful vibe that is maintained by “Life Lessons”, just before it turns darker and even western-ish with the excellent “Jacob’s Ladder”. The release continues ramping up with the lush atmospherics of “Kiss the Wilds” and the enigmatic “Horrid Host”, a song that is more effective thanks to its grainy sound.

With “Gifts of Oneoroi” the release reaches a certain cathartic moment, thanks to its visceral nature, and it is greatly followed by the dramatic “Axe and Mistletoe” with its pulsating percussions and lush atmospherics. On the more traditional Neofolk-ish side, “A Nation Falling” is a great somber song with very powerful lyrics, definitely one of our favorite Blood and Sun songs of all time. As the release closes with “All is Bloom All is Ruin”, Luke Tromiczak leaves things in a powerful and chaotic way, up to the listener to fully discover.

As a whole, “Aion’s Light” is an amazingly raw and visceral release that showcases Blood and Sun in a very unfiltered way. Luke Tromiczak is a crafty songwriter, both lyrically and musically, and shows that even with a basic production, the message and power of his music is easily conveyed. With winter coming, this release will certainly get its fair share of play time in a cozy fireplace.
