Featuring a very fuzzy and twangy sound, today we have Wailin Storms and their Season of Mist first release: “The Arsonist”. Mixing elements from outfits like King Dude, Beast Milk/Grave Pleasures and Årabrot, this outfit delivers nine crafty tracks, clocking in at over 46 minutes. For those that like hard to define but yet rewarding music, the band will immerse you in their Southerny sound from the first minute.

Opening with the doomy “Dead End”, we instantly get captured by Justin Storms shapeshifting vocals, alongside crafty percussion and tempo changes. With each track having its own personality, the band navigates through murky aural territories with songs like the twangy “Heart of Mine”, the heavier post-punkish “You Never Answered” and “Patient Night”, to the more solemn (early) Hexvessel-ish album title track. The versatility of the band to craft enigmatic tracks that are engaging and yet direct is their biggest triumph in this release.

From the moody “Never Rest”, to the more hypnotic “Saved”, the band manages to settle into a vibe as this release crosses its middle point and transitions to a hectic closing with pieces like “The Wind”, and the dramatic “It's All Dark Now Where Your Eyes Used To Be”. With a wide spectrum of elements and styles, Wailin Storms manages to deliver a very unique and cinematic release that is highly engaging and exciting. If you are looking for something different, something dark, and full of raw emotion, look no further and get a copy of “The Arsonist”.
