Just when you think you have heard enough Finnish Melodic Death Metal, a band like Crowen comes around and lets you know that you can always enjoy some more. In their latest EP, “Through the Dying Mist”, the band combines elements from all the greats: Wolfheart, Before the Dawn, Insomnium, Dawn of Solace, etc. Unleashing 16-minutes of high-octane music, this release is the perfect addition for any fan of the genre, as it is unique enough to not be labeled a clone of the previously mentioned outfits.

Opening with the engaging “Ember Wraith”, we get a solid transition between your typical atmospheric intro into heavy distorted guitars and a crafty tempo changes. Esa Uusimaa and Sami Sandberg do a pretty solid job in crafting a sound that, while familiar, packs its own identity and cranks killer guitar leads and pummeling drumming. The vocal arrangements of tracks like “Line of Silence” are quite entertaining, keeping things diverse and fresh as the band layers growls and clean vocals with a solid execution.

Moving into more Wolfheart-meets-Insomnium territory the melancholic “I Am The Sorrow” is one of our favorite tracks in this release, blending powerful aggression and masterful guitar leads. Closing with another melancholic piece, “The Unwritten End”, Crowen leaves the listener wanting more as their style is quite engaging and familiar. As an added bonus, this release features Tuomas Saukkonen on bass guitar, but from the video of “Ember Wraith”, it also seems he is handling the drumming. This is a must have EP for any fan of the genre.
