Dreams of Gray - A Beginning (2025)

Unleashing a very lively and engaging Melodic Metal EP, today we have North America’s Dreams of Gray with “A Beginning”. Featuring an interesting mixture of Melodic Death Metal, Thrash, Progressive Metal, and a few other elements, this three song EP is very well crafted and showcases the promise behind Luis Rivera’s brainchild. If you are into bands like Dark Tranquility, Katatonia, In Flames, etc. this is a release to check out.

Opening with the EP title track sets a blistering pace filled with crafty melodies and crafty tempo changes. This initial track gives a mixture of Grey Skies Fallen and Katatonia vibes, allowing for a seamless transition into “Beyond the Sky”, and its progressive elements. This second track continues the melodic onslaught as it blends some heavier passages with harsher screams. Closing this release, our favorite, “Across the Endless Sea” is a song with an even more melancholic edge and some old-school Power/Thrash Metal elements.

As a whole, “A Beginning” is a pretty solid release of a one-man band with solid ideas and excellent execution. There is certainly a cohesive sound to Dreams of Gray, and a short EP nicely introduces the listener to it. We wonder if a longer release would tend to sound a bit repetitive and some of the flair would become normal. But until then, this release is certainly fun and recommended for fans of Melodic Metal.
