Megascavenger – Descent of Yuggoth (2013)

cover

Megascavenger is the latest project of Swedish Death Metal icon Rogga Johansson. “Descent of Yuggoth” is the band’s debut full-length release that is set to crush waves of people with its very traditional Death Metal riffs and demonic growls.

Opening with some crushing riffs and crazy solos, “Nihilisticon” makes an immediate statement as the album’s first track. Deep growls and catchy sections are plentiful in this impressive track that any fan of the genre will greatly enjoy. “Descent Of Yuggoth” quickly creates a wall of distortion that is nicely appreciated as the track moves forward and delivers some meaty hooks and even some more unconventional sections. In “Smokescreen Armaggedon”, the combination of Rogga’s growls with the guest vocalist (we will say who they are later) greatly enhances this track.

Reminding us of the old days of Entombed and Grave, “Void of Damnation”, “Funerals And Ceremonies”, and “No Heaven For The Sane” deliver traditional no-bullshit Swedish Death Metal that is very rare to find these days. The grainy feeling behind the production of some of these tracks greatly enhances the overall effect of the music presented by Rogga through this project. The album closes with our favorite song, “To Revel With Vermin” a slowly creeping anthem that embodies all our favorite qualities of the genre.

Featuring guest appearances from some of the biggest name in the business like Jörgen Sandström, Dan Swano, Paul Speckmann, and Marc Grewe on vocals, as well as some solos by Patrick Mameli, Jonas Lindblood and Eric Daniels. If you are a Swedish Death Metal aficionado, this is one release that you do not want to miss.
