We always strive to find the weirdest and oddest bands that push the boundaries of Metal and extreme music. In 2017 we had quite a few releases that blew us away, here are the ones we think are the top 10 of the year.
Honorable Mention: Fleurety - Fragmenta Cuinsvis Aetatis Contemporaneae (2017)
As one of the most productive genres of 2017, Post-Black Metal has taken the scene by storm with tons of bands unleashing solid releases. With many of said releases being copies of the pioneers, we have narrowed down the ones that have truly pushed the genre in 2017.
As our favorite genres, in 2017 we saw a great influx of debut releases. However, most of those bands still need to find their own identity. Luckily, some classic bands picked up the slack and delivered some killer albums.
Being huge fans of this style of BM, we got lucky with some amazing releases coming from known and up-and-coming bands that you should keep an ear out for.
Honorable Mention: Dimmu Borgir - Forces of the Northern Night (2017)
2017 was a great year for Death Metal, with many legendary bands dropping new releases. Fans of the genre should not worry about the quality and quantity of releases.

With many bands playing Post-Metal (and its variants) in the last few years, it was quite hard to narrow this list down. Tons of great releases, but our top albums present the definite best from 2017. Note that this list is missing any Post-BM albums, which are compiled in a separate top of 2017 page.
Honorable Mention Telepathy - Tempest (2017)
Closing the year we have the list of the best releases we reviewed this 2016. After scouring through hours of music each week for Infernal Masquerade, these 25 albums are the ones we were most impressed by. In terms of the albums we didn't review (because no promo was submitted), but we think they deserve some props as they would have easily made this list we have: Alcest - 'Kodama', Dark Tranquility - 'Atoma', Clouds - 'Departe' and Borknagar - 'Winter Thrice'.
