Ba'al - The Fine Line Between Heaven And Here (2025)
Unleashing a highly melancholic and very cathartic release, today we have UK’s Ba’al with “The Fine Line Between Heaven and Here”. Featuring over 60 minutes of a brilliant amalgamation of Sludge/Post-Metal/Doom Metal, and some sprinkles of Black Metal, this release is fierce and punishing. Creating masterful emotionally charged soundscapes, this album will sneak up on you and you will find yourself playing it over and over again. Opening with the moody “Mother’s Concrete Womb”, the band sets a bleak and yet pummeling mood, thanks to crushing Sludgey riffs that blend into lush Post-Metal territories. There are plenty of tempo changes into fierce and brutal Black Metal-ish territories, perfectly adorned by the harsh, and familiar, screams of Joe Stamps, of current Hecate Enthroned fame. The band seamlessly transitions between dreamy atmospheric passages, like the opening of “Waxwork Gorgon” as it transitions into heavy walls of distortion and moody Sludgy/Post-Metal atmospherics.

As the band’s fifth full-length release, this album features over 43 minutes of engaging music that has a traditional vibe for the genre while infusing some Spagetti-Western undertones and a solid dose of heavy riffs. Immortal Bird - Sin Querencia (2024)
Creating a very unique style of aural abuse, today we have Sludge/Post Metal and Crust outfit Immortal Bird and their third full-length release “Sin Querencia”. Featuring eight tracks and nearly 36 minutes of musical madness, this release is heavy, contrived, chaotic, and downright insanely good. There is some brilliance to creating such dissonance and yet feeling cohesive and devastating enough to captivate the listener, and this release delivers that in heaps. Opening with “Bioluminescent Toxins” we get a fairly straightforward piece with piercing riffs, crafty drums and a slow progression that feels very traditional for Sludge. However, Rae Amitay’s vocals quickly shift the mood, ranging from hellish harsh screams to sultry cleans, creating very interesting and contrasting sections. Blistering brutality follows with the piercing “Plastered Sainthood”, the trippy “Consanguinity”, and the Djenty “Propagandized”, with the band showcasing raw brutality and tons of weird and crafty ideas.

Amarok - Resilience (2024)
Unraveling a gargantuan Doom/Sludge Metal release, today we have North America’s Amarok and their punishing sophomore release “Resilience”. In the same vein as outfits like Bell Witch, Nizmor, Usnea and Lycus, this band crafts some of the most oppressive and soul crushing long and demoralizing songs we have ever heard. Five tracks and nearly sixty-five minutes of music are a testament to this. Opening with the emotional rollercoaster that is “Charred (X)” the band quickly sets a very bleak and desolate soundscape, filled with Sludgy riffs and hellish vocals. If your soul did not get crushed by the 17-minute opener, the 18-minute “Ascension (XI)” will surely achieve that. This track has an even slower pace, throwing Funeral Doom vibes as the weeping guitars make way for slow snarls and piercing growls. Filled with crafty tempo changes, this track is definitely one of the finest of its kind, and a new personal favorite.

It has been a while since we heard from Downfall of Gaia and their uniquely devastating mixture of Atmospheric Black/Post-Black Metal with some Crust and Sludge elements. With “Silhouettes of Disgust” the band marks their return and they are thirsty for blood. Featuring 45 minutes and eight tracks of crushing music, the band creates a very hectic and demoralizing atmosphere with waves of punishing riffs, blistering drumming, and hellish vocals. Opening with the powerful and melodic “Existence Of Awe”, the band sets on a crushing path with their signature Atmospheric nature alongside crafty aggression. The Punkish drumming of the opener and “The Whir of Flies” nicely gives that Euro Crust vibe, while perfectly blending in with the more traditional Black Metal elements. We particularly enjoy the band’s relentless tempo changes as they weave between high-octane sections to more introspective and melancholic passages.
