Twilight – Monument To Time End (2010)

cover

Being revived back in 2009 by Black Judd (Nachtmystium) and Wrest (Leviathan, Krieg) we have Twilight, no relation to the gay vampire fest currently destroying America’s youth. The band featured members of several American Black Metal bands, and now it includes Sanford Parker (Minsk), Stavros Giannopolous (The Atlas Moth) and Aaron Turner (ISIS), making it a true ‘all-star band’.

As the main characteristic of all the musicians in Twilight, we have that all of them have created music that is both fresh and different in the American Metal scene. The unison of such minds comes to life with “Monument To Time End” in a very interesting way, making Black Metal take a whole new dimension.

With N. Imperial handling most of the vocal duties, we have that this element is the most traditional when it comes to Black Metal. All the rest of the music sounds completely different to what you are used to listen to from BM bands. For example, we have a heavy Sludge/Stoner Metal influence in the guitars thanks to Stavros from The Atlas Moth, as well as Blake Judd’s personal funkiness behind the guitar.

The overall sound of the album is very diverse and intriguing, there are some straight forward songs like “Fall Behind Eternity”, but they always have to have different elements that makes them sound unconventional and different, like the use of weird FX’s and the Mini Moog (courtesy of Sanford Parker). Twilight’s sound is both crushing and very different to what’s out there these days, and makes this album very fresh.

The drumming is something that we can call normal in most cases, since it’s somewhat traditional for Black Metal, but there are also some bits where it sounds like a Sludge/Stoner Metal drum track. Since the band has three different people contributing to the guitars, we get a wide assortment of different style of riffs that will keep listeners very entertained while guessing which musician played what part.

“Monument To Time End” is probably one of the most unique releases we have ever listened to, and it’s sure worth your time and money. Featuring some of the best musicians the ‘underground’ American scene currently has, Twilight is a very unique band that, while we wont get to see live in the future, surely has enormous potential to create fresh music that will surely impress everybody that stumbles upon it.
