Marionette – Enemies (2010)

cover

We usually get quite a few bands that claim to play Melodic Death Metal, but fail miserably to deliver an engaging and entertaining album. Marionette is an example of a band that DOES deliver, and their album “Enemies” is one of the best Melodic DM albums we have received in quite a while.

“Enemies” starts off very aggressively and all over the place, so we immediately expected the album to suck. However after the first 60 seconds, all this changes and you can hear the quality of the bands music, and it hooks you into listening to the whole album.

Featuring both aggressive and melodic guitar lines we are very happy with the variety presented by Marionette. But what hooked us even more is the ethereal sounding keyboards presented in the tracks. And even more appealing is the electronic/futuristic sounds that they inject into their music. This gives them a completely different edge over most of the stuff we have listened to in a while.

The band that is closest to Marionette in sound we can think of is Silent Descent, but Marionette is more aggressive and the vocals are a clear example of this. They also don’t break into ‘synth pop’ sections like Silent Descent does.

Every single song in this album is perfectly crafted to featuring intricate melodies and great atmospheric elements. There are only a handful albums we have heard that feature these two elements combined to the same perfection like Marionette does in “Enemies”.

Another interesting thing about the band is the creepy suspender and ties look they have; also the eye makeup usage brings to memory Malcolm McDowell in his role in the movie Clock Work orange. But this ‘weird’ look never gets in the way of the band creating a musical masterpiece with “Enemies”

With all the current pussy Melo-Deah bands out there is refreshing to have the likes of Marionette creating truly Melodic and aggressive assault for all the true Melodic Death Metal fans out there. This album is a must for any fan of the genre tired of all the weak releases on the scene these days.
