Unleashing catchiness and epic Heavy/Doom Metal vibes, today we have Norway’s Avrak and their self-titled debut release. Featuring none other than Ted Skjellum (Darkthrone) and Anders Hegna (Nød, El Kayenne, Svidd Grevling), this outfit presents a very lively take on the genre(s), creating a very polished and enjoyable release. While there are no overtly evident Black Metal elements here as some would expect, there are still some to be found, making listening to this album a bit of a scavenger hunt.

Opening with the sinister riffs of “Forever Mountain”, we get a very lively Rock/Metal introduction to the band’s polished and yet direct sound. The riffs are crisp and Anders Hegna’s raspy vocals are fitting, having a certain Chrome Division/Athera style. The music itself is catchy and engaging, with tight drumming courtesy of Terje Kråbøl (Gjendød, Sarke, Faustcoven), and throbbing bass guitar line from Steinar Gundersen (Khold, Sarke, Satyricon).

Now that the name-dropping is finally done, tracks like “Unborn” and “Long May The Lums Reek” weave back and forth between highly melodic passages, intoxicating vocal melodies, and interesting atmospheric elements. Songs are short and direct, with tracks like “Varde”, “Cloaks of Power” and “The Lonely Shadow”, slowly unveiling more of the band’s influences with some more imposing riffs, faster drumming, crafty guitar leads, alongside plenty of headbanging moments.

Our favorite song has to be the crushing “The Rift” and its awesome guitar work, so be on the look out for that one. As a whole, Avrak is a highly talented band, no doubt because of its members, that is making crafty and enjoyable music that does not fall under a single genre. The songs in this release have a certain “jam session” vibe, making the whole experience even more organic and engaging. If you are a fan of the Norwegian Metal scene, be sure to check these guys out as you will find many familiar things.
