Having a blossoming Metal scene, Spain today gives us The Holeum and their third full-length release “Ensis”. Featuring a crushing Post-Metal sound, this outfit delivers seven tracks and over 40-minutes of intense music, filled with crafty tempo changes and some truly intense riffing. With parallels to bands like The Ocean, Dodecahedron, and similar outfits, this release delivers sheer brutality and moodiness in a very compact and devastating package.

Opening with the blistering “The Fermi Paradox”, the band unleashes waves of punishing riffs and moody tempo changes. Continuing the onslaught, “Cosmic Void Sphere” starts with a similar bite, only to morph into more melancholic and dark atmospherics thanks to a very hypnotic pace and the clean/harsh vocal onslaught of Pablo Egido. The Doomy undernotes are quite effective, inducing relentless headbanging as “Macrocosm + Microcosm” and "Spontaneous Synchronization” ooze melancholy alongside crushing guitars.

Escalating the level of aggression with “Hyperdimensional Physics" and “Esoteric Futuristic Visions”, the band showcases their more vicious edge thanks to harrowing snarls alongside crafty drumming and a very drone-y vibe. As the album progresses, the band continues to showcase their maturity and expert ability to create fully immersive and disharming tracks like our favorite “Geometric Congruence Vortex”.

Overall, “Ensis” is one hell of a Post-Metal release that showcases a masterful duality, filled with dreamy and eternal atmospherics, alongside harsh vocals and very lively guitars. With a very hypnotic tempo thanks to some very crafty drumming, this release is both tense and engaging, keeping the listener fully immersed in the band’s sound. If you like powerful Post-Metal music filled with piercing atmospherics and playful tempo changes, The Holeum is a band you don’t want to miss out on.
