    The Devil’s Blood – The Time Of No Time Evermore (2009)

    The Devil’s Blood is one of those bands that will totally catch you by surprise. Playing a funky mixture of Progressive Rock with Psychedelic Rock they totally rock at it.

    I have never been a fan of the 70’s music of the same style, but there is something about “The Time Of No Time Evermore” that hooked me since the first time I heard the album and now I find myself enjoying this release at any point during the day, after listening to whatever other kind of music I’m currently reviewing.

    Leaves’ Eyes – My Destiny (2009)

    I was psyched when I received this CD on the mail, since I’ve been waiting for quite a while to get some new Leaves’ Eyes music. And let me tell you I was pretty shocked by the opening riff of the track “My Destiny” since I was not expecting it.

    The riff is very commercial hard-rock /Metal in nature and I had that whole déjà vu feeling when Lacuna Coil went very commercial, however the song got a bit better and the rest of the album continues in the traditional Leaves’ Eyes fashion.

    Nervecell – Preaching Venom (2009)

    Lifeforce Records brings us “Preaching Venom” from the UAE based band Nervecell, the band plays Death/Trash metal with some melodic elements. While none of the band members are nationals of UAE, Dubai more specifically, they all reside there and make their music in that corner of the world.

    Nervecell’s features David Haley of Psycroptic fame on drums, and as you can expect the drumming in this album is close to perfection; all tracks are tightly played and brilliantly written and executed. The other 3 musicians from the band as I can tell do not play in any other bands in the scene, but they are still pretty good at their instruments.

    Urfaust – Einsiedler (2009)

    The Dutch duo of Urfaust comes back with their latest 2 song EP “Einsiedler” and after doing a bit of research about this band I figured I was into another pointless voyage from ‘just another’ crappy Ambient/Raw Black Metal band, and I was very wrong about this.

    “Einsiedler” features over 18 minutes of mesmerizing Ambient/Raw Black Metal that should be set as one of the standards for the genre. Their amazing ambiance created by the keyboards in the track “IX Einsiedler” is both eerie and enthralling I have not enjoyed a simple but well composed keyboard arrangement like this one in quite a while. While you still have the traditional shrieks on the song, they also added a very melodic clean vocal that complements the track to perfection. The overall down-tempo and doomy feeling of this song is amazing and it’s probably one of the reasons I enjoyed the full 11 minutes it lasts.

    Ava Inferi – Blood Of Bacchus (2009)

    Having formed in 2005 Ava Inferi presents us their 3rd full length album. The band shows great maturity and improvement in their already characteristic sound, with “Blood Of Bacchus”.

    Ava Inferi’s mixture of Doom Metal with Gothic elements is unparalleled, blending the traditional Doom riffs with mesmerizing female vocals provided by Carmen Simões, and the guitar work is provided by none other than Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen from Aura Noir (the self labeled ugliest band in the world) and Mayhem, which he left in order to fully concentrate on Ava Inferi.

    Lethian Dreams – Bleak Silver Streams (2009)

    I have always been an extreme fan of Death/Doom Metal bands and all of the variants of the genre, so I’m usually very harsh when reviewing newer bands. So this being said “Bleak Silver Streams” is a brilliant album that I will start to praise greatly in the next few paragraphs.

    This French band features members of several other brilliant Doom Metal bands like Remembrance and Before The Rain. Having only released two brilliant albums this band shows great promise to keep releasing amazing albums.

    A Forest Of Stars – The Corpse Of Rebirth (2008)

    A Forest Of Stars is one of those bands that is trying to push the barriers of music, by creating a very interesting sounding mix of different elements with Black Metal.

    This British quartet features Katie Stone (ex My Dying Bride) as the ‘Queen Of Ghost’ and other equally interestingly named characters: Mr. Curse, The Gentleman and Mr T.S. Kettleburner.

    Impiety – Terroreign: Apocalyptic Armageddon Command (2009)

    The Trashy Death/Black Metal trio of Singapore is back with their sixth full length album that brings back their old school sound. Since the first track this album is very fast paced and intense, something that I was not expecting from this band.

    Impiety’s only founding member is their guitarist and vocalist: Shyaithan. He is the driving force behind the band’s almost 20 year trajectory and their old school sound that is desperately needed these days.

    Malfeitor – Incubus (2009)

    After their amazing debut album “Unio Mystica Maxima”, Malfeitor is back with their aggressive raw Black Metal. Featuring M. Fabban of Aborym on bass and vocals you can start to imagine what to expect from this band.

    This Italian five-piece have been around only since 2006, and since their first release they have been turning heads. The band has managed to create an astounding combination of old school Swedish and Norwegian Black Metal that is very grim and raw.

    Dark Celebration - Phlegeton: The Transcendence Of Demon Lords (2009)

    Dark Celebration is an old school Death/Black Metal band from Brazil that is trying to keep the style alive. “Phlegeton….” marks their second full length album but strangely enough it’s only 30 minutes long.

    The band’s style is very reminiscent of early Morbid Angel and to me it sounds very similar to The Chasm. The band tries to bring back that old school style that I haven’t heard in a while, and they do so to some extent.
