    Pseudogod – Deathwomb Catechesis (2012)

    After countless split releases, Russia’s Pseudogod delivers their debut full-length “Dethwomb Catechesis”. Pummeling through eight tracks of violent Death/Black Metal that creates a thick-as-fuck atmosphere, the band does a pretty solid effort in presenting us with their debut release. Hailing from Russia, this band sounds like it has a lot of hate and anger to vent and they sure make their point with “Deathwomb Catechesis”.

    Opening with the demolishing “Vehement Decimation”, the band immediately fills the room with a wall of distorted guitars and hellish growls. The band’s sound is a brutal as you can get and thanks to the thick distortion layer, it sounds entirely demonical. “Malignant Spears”, “Saturnalia”, “Azazel”, and “The Antichrist Victory”, keep delivering waves of negative vibes, adding to the overall atmosphere of destruction that this release present. We particularly like how the band gets a bit Doom-ier in some sections like on “Azazel” and it’s very decadent slowdown passage that also features and excellent guitar solo.

    Six Feet Under – Undead (2012)

    With Cannibal Corpse returning this 2012 with an impressive release, ex-CC member Chris Barnes the folks at Six Feet Under fire back with the hyper groovy “Undead”. After the lukewarm “Death Rituals” back in 2008, it is nice to hear that Six Feet Under is still capable of delivering a solid album with plenty of meaty hooks and excellent chugging sections.

    Opening with the powerful “Frozen At the Moment of Death”, the riffing immediately stands out due to its timeless DM vibe. The drumming is pretty hectic and Chris Barnes vocals perfectly fit the bill. While the raw power he had in the past is not there anymore, he can still deliver excellent growls by DM standards. Aside from the meaty hooks presented in tracks like “Fromaldehyde”, “18 Days”, “Molest Dead”, and “Blood on My Hands”, the slow groovy vibe that SFU constructs around their songs is what makes them standout in the scene.

    Unleashed – Odalheim (2012)

    Continuing on the concept brought forth on “As Yggdrasil Trembles”, Unleashed delivers their every two years release with “Odalheim”. As one of the forefathers of Viking Metal, Unleashed keeps bringing it every time they release an album and with the high-intensity of “Odalheim” they keep maintaining their aggressive-yet-melodic brand of DM that many bands wish they could play.

    Blasting through their opener “Fimbulwinter”, this release is off to a great start with fast riffing, blistering drumming and the always effective vocals of Hedlund. The riffing courtesy of the band’s longstanding guitarists Anders Schultz and Tomas Olsson nicely switches band from high-powered Viking Metal sections and some barebones DM chugs. It is very surprising to see that the band has not had any line-up changes in years and it shows in the overall quality and tightness of their music.

    Hour of Penance – Sedition (2012)

    With a massive and destructive sound, today we have Hour of Penance and their latest release “Sedition”. Waiving the Technical Brutal Death Metal flag, Hour of Penance delivers high intensity brutal music with a nice technical edge that puts them over their closest competition. While not as technical as Obscura, Decrepit Birth, and similar band, this release compensates with intense drumming and a more brutal feel to the music.

    After the opening instrumental, the band delivers its first punch with “Enlightened Submission”, a very brutal and crushing opening song. The growls are as deep and brutal as you can get, but the massive drumming is what immediately sticks out. “Decimate the Ancestry of the Only God” and “Fall of the Servants” keep pummeling your ears with insane levels of brutality, thanks to the hellish vocals and powerful riffs that accompany the extreme drumming.

    Impiety – Ravage & Conquer (2012)

    Recently signed to Pulverised records, today we have Impiety and their eight full-length released titled “Ravage & Conquer”. Feeling like a bag of bricks to the face, “Ravage & Conquer” delivers some of the most brutal music Impiety has ever written. Pummeling through eight furiously paced tracks, this is one release that no fan of this band would want to miss.

    Opening like an epic soundtrack to some medieval battle, the guitars blast through things and the punishing drumming indicates that Impiety has arrived. “Revelation Decimation” is the 8 minute opener that delivers waves of brutal onslaughts of hellish vocals and crushing riffs. The band’s sound is cleaner than in previous releases and the overall feeling is very chaotic and brutal… just what the doctor ordered. Steamrolling with “Ravage & Conquer”, “Weaponized” and “The Scourge Majesty”, this release is off to a very brutal and intense start, not to mention several 8+ minute long anthems of destruction.

    Cannibal Corpse – Torture (2012)

    Bouncing back from the lackluster “Evisceration Plague”, Cannibal Corpse returns with 40 minutes of pure Death Metal that will catapult them back on top of the genre. Pummeling through 12 tracks, the band will surely surprise you with their renewed energy and crushing songs that will have you head banging in minutes.

    Breaking the listener in with “Demented Aggression”, the guitar riffing is furious and well-paced, the drums are pretty solid and the growls/screams perfectly balanced. Immediately we noticed that the production is crystal clear and with a very balanced mix, everything clicks without anything being over powering. With “Sarcophagic Frenzy” the album speed pick up a bit more and the pounding bass guitar line begins to shine. The meaty hooks and chugging guitars make “Scourge of Iron” a very powerful song, nicely keeping the momentum going in this album.

    Fallen Divine - The Binding Cycle (2011)

    As 2011 winds down and big labels are saving their ‘big’ releases of the opening of 2012, it is very nice to hear fantastic self-released albums like Fallen Divine’s “The Binding Cycle”. Hailing from Norway, this band is ready to conquer the Metal world with crazy-fast guitars, demonic vocals, crafty drumming, and very intricate and skillful compositions. We are very surprised this band has not been picked up by any label yet.

    Immediately showing of their skills with “Dissension”, the band quickly delivers waves of powerful riffs, aggressive vocals and a pounding bass guitar line. The drumming keeps all things together in a very tight manner and nicely changes tempos several times during the song. The atmospheric keyboards give this already awesome track a bit more of flair and epicness. The ethereal atmospheric passage is nicely adorned by great guitar work and a pulsating bass guitar section. Pretty much this is the band’s formula for success and they greatly present it in different shapes through this release.

    Inverted – Point of Crossing (2011)

    Arriving all the way from Italy, today we have Inverted’s debut full-length release “Point of Crossing” strictly for old school Death Metal fans. In the 10 tracks featured on this CD, fans of the genre will find plenty of meaty riffs and powerful growls. Not reinventing the wheel or anything, Inverted does a great job in crafting songs that are both engaging and very appealing for moshpit induced craziness.

    With the brutal opening track “Disgrace”, the band quickly sets the pace for a very hectic and crushing release. The riffing is very traditional and the drumming is top notch, making the vocals shine very nicely in the middle of things. The bass guitar is pretty well balanced into the mix and nicely crafted. While this is music to any DM fan ears, it is also something that has been done one million times before and Inverted does little to improve or carve their name in the genre.

    Legacy of Brutality – Path of Forgotten Souls (2011)

    Delivering 39 minutes of neck snapping Death Metal, today we have Legacy of Brutality and their debut full-length “Path of Forgotten Souls” out on Chief Records. Through the nine tracks presented in the release, we have chugging guitars, bestial drumming and nice hooks, making it one of the most straight forward and well crafted DM releases of 2011.

    While everybody and their mother is out there playing your run of the mill cookie monster DM, Legacy of Brutality focuses on creating catchy tracks with meaty hooks and demonic vocals. The band excels in adding small touches of flair into their sound by relying on very technical guitar and bass guitar work and drumming, but never falling into the Obscura category for Technical DM.

    Austrian Death Machine – Jingle All the Way (2011)

    With a hefty dose of pounding guitars and Arnold Schwarzenegger ridicule, today we have Austrian Death Machine and their latest single “Jingle All the Way”. Featuring three songs of hilarious and very well crafted Metal, As I Lay Dying’s Tim Lambesis is ready for another round of wackiness.

    Opening with “I’m not a Pervert”, the ‘band’ delivers high-octane guitar riffing with crushing vocals and some Arnold-like spoken sections. This song is very well crafted and pretty brutal indeed, it just makes it even better with the funny lyrics. Next on the agenda, the pounding “It’s Turbo time” delivers more devastating guitar riffs and a nice intensity.
