  • Subterranean Disposition – Subterranean Disposition (2012)

    Arriving from Canada’s Hypnotic Dirge Records, today we have a pretty solid Death/Doom Metal band named Subterranean Disposition. Unleashing their self-titled debut album, this one man band features Australian scene veteran Terry Vainoras delivering five tracks of crushing Death/Doom in the vein of bands like Mournful Congregation, Mourning Beloveth, but with a faster pace and a few surprises.

    Opening with the 9-minute epic “Between Apes and Angles” the band has all the hallmarks of a traditional release in the genre and some cool atmospheric elements. The riffs are slow and powerful, and the growls are pretty solid, nothing out of the ordinary if you ask us. However, things start getting interesting with “Prolong this Agony” and some experimental elements here and there. The pop/jazzy female vocals work quite well when introduced in a melodic passage, effectively changing the pace of the track and puzzling the listener for a bit.

  • Silent Leges Inter Arma – Silent Leges Inter Arma (2012)

    Hailing from Germany, today we have a very interesting sounding Black/Death Metal band named “Silent Leges Inter Arma” and their self-title debut release. While this band has no ‘fancy’ elements on their music, their song writing abilities makes their sound be old school and brutal while still having some modern elements that makes them very unique sounding. If this sounds weird, just imagine Sepultura circa “Morbid Visions” with modern BM elements.

    Starting with a very average track titled “We Are”, the band kind of has a pattern in the opening songs of this release of one average track followed by a good one, seems weird it turned out this way (or we liked the album this way). “Falcon-Headed One” delivers quite powerful growls and very interesting guitar work. Here you can perfectly notice the band’s weird and unique sound that makes them different from the rest, maybe comparable to bands like Secrets of The Moon and such in terms of their guitar work.

  • Resurgency – False Enlightenment (2012)

    Formed back in 2009, today we have Resurgency’s debut full-length release titled “False Enlightenment”. Targeted directly to fans of chugging Death Metal, this Greek band delivers 40+ minutes of excellent neck-breaking music that will have you moshing since the first song. Hellthrasher Productions again amazes us with a great ear for bands that play devastating Death Metal but do not fall in the repetitiveness and dullness that plagues other ‘bands’ these days.

    The band quickly gets down to business with the hectic “Craniums of Slain Disciples”. “Ending the Beginning” quickly moves into faster territory with crushing drum patterns, tight riffs, and subhuman growls (just what the doctor ordered). With the perfect tempo, we particularly enjoy “Black Holes of Antiverse”, a very crushing track that feels like a slow punch in the face. For the fans of blast-beats and brutal songs, “Dark Revival” has that aggressive feeling of bands like Broken Hope and Suffocation, thanks to the pulsating bass guitar line and intricate riffing.

  • Ectovoid – Fractured in the Timeless Abyss (2012)

    With a very foul traditional Death Metal vibe, today we have Ectovoid and their debut full-length release “Fractured in the Timeless Abyss”. Reeking of old-school Incantation, Immolation, and similar bands, this three-piece from Alabama manage to bring back that heavy and cavernous feeling of crushing Death Metal to the year 2012 with such grace and brutality.

    Opening with the 1-2 combo of “Transcend Into the Moonless Night” and “Shapeshifting Mass”, the band quickly establishes a somewhat sluggish pace with brutal riffs and a very dense atmosphere. The band’s ability to create very thunderous riffs is just outstanding and will hook any DM fan immediately after two tracks. In a more playful fashion, “Dark Clouds of Consciousness” delivers excellent growls and very intricate drums, with a few devastating speed ups.

  • Sakatat - Bir Devrin Sonu (2012)

    Delivering their pummeling ‘full-length’ debut “Bir Devrin Sonu”, today we have one of Turkey’s most brutal bands named Sakatat. Claiming to have political ideas behind their perplexingly brutal music, this band manages to deliver the shortest full-length release ever: eight minutes long.

    Spanning eight tracks, this ultra brutal and ultra fast release has the feeling of something so intense that you won’t even feel it’s too short. With all the lyrics and song names in Turkish, we can’t really appreciate the message behind the music, but we can say that each short tracks is as brutal as they come, reminding us of the old Agathocles, Dahmer and such bands.

  • Malfeitor – Dum Morior Orior (2012)

    Attacking our ears with relentless riffing, today we have Malfeitor’s “Dum Morior Orior”. For a band that formed in 1990, it is quite suspect that they are finally releasing their debut full-length in 2012. Anyways, this old-school Swedish Death Metal band does a pretty solid job in delivering Grave-like song structures that while effective, they feel a bit outdated by current standards.

    “Conversation in Minor” delivers the first onslaught of riffing and the nostalgic feelings begin. Reminding us of the great Grave, this band does pack a lot of heat in this release, but it also seems like it was in the ‘cooler’ for a bit too long. There are pretty solid riffs and excellent bass guitar sections in this track, and the growls are very typical of the period, but it just fails to move us like other recent Swedish DM releases.

  • Intestinal – The Rottening (2012)

    With a cover that reminds us of Cannibal Corpse’s infamous “Tomb of the Mutilated” or “Gallery of Suicide” uncensored covers, today we have Sweden’s Intestinal and their second full-length “The Rottening”.  Featuring eleven tracks of Swedish Death Metal with a bit of a modern flair, this release is actually far more unconventional that one would expect just from the cover.

    Opening with a traditional sample, the music soon start flowing and while the Swedish DM vibe is present, the band tends to start away from the formulaic meaty hooks approach. Instead in “Flesh for Living” we have a more playful approach with the music being quite exciting, having some Hardcore and even some Modern metal hints, this track is quite enjoyable. The electrifying drumming in “Vaginal Vomination” delivers excellent sections that are quite a revelation for what we were expecting form this release.

  • Escarnium – Excruciating Existence (2012)

    Packing a lot of heat in their traditional Death Metal, today we have Escarnium and their first full-length release “Excruciating Existence”. Featuring nine track of neck-breaking Death Metal, this band delivers excellent guitar riffs and tight drumming throughout this whole release. If you are a fan of Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Incantation, etc., this is the release for you.

    With the crushing opener “731” the band delivers a powerful blow in the shape of relentless drumming and devastating riffs. The deep growls are up to par with any of the genre’s greats, but the overall meatiness of the music is what makes this release very appealing. The devastation rolls on with tracks like “Excruciating Existence”, “Self-Proclaimed Messiah”, and “Nuclear Burial”. While the band is not the most original in the world, they do an excellent job in delivering catchiness and brutality.

  • Refusal – Grasp (2012)

    Remember the good old days when extreme music did not had faggy clean vocals and breakdowns?, if you do, then Refusal’s latest demo “Grasp” provides a nice stroll through memory lane. Delivering four songs of very typical Swedish Death Metal, this band from Finland does a great job in capturing a timeless sound and making it their own with super catchy tracks.

    Opening with the neck breaking “Do Your Part”, the band’s sound immediately has that old-school vibe. The riffing is quite catchy and the vocals are raspy and powerful. This song also features a pretty solid tempo that is nicely marked by the well-crafted drums. The band reminds us of Grave in certain instances. Keeping the catchiness flowing, “Grip” delivers nice and meaty guitars paired with excellent growls. In this track we can verify that the band does a great job in creating a certain tempo that works perfectly with the riffing and the vocals.

  • Nile – At the Gate of Sethu (2012)

    The everlasting Nile returns to us this 2012 with yeah another dose of extremely brutal Death Metal with hints of Middle Eastern influences. While we loved “Those Whom The Gods Detest”, this release feels too much like a continuation of that album and nothing else. The production of this release makes the guitars sound a bit weird (very thin in a way), the bass guitar is very hard to find, the drums are a bit drowned in the mix, and only highlights the vocals (both growls and clean ones), making for a unique but weird listening experience.

    The hyper-fast “Enduring the Eternal Molestation of Flame” opens the musical onslaught with great brutality and crushing riffs (that sound a bit weird). The hellish different vocal layers are pretty demonic sounding, and the overall drumming is actually quite good, but it sometimes gets lost behind the growls. There is no doubt that there are some excellent technical sections in this track, but there is nothing new to show when compared to their previous release.
