Infernal Masquerade: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, and let’s get started. Can you tell us how did Eclectika came to exist, and how did you guys decided what music to play?
Eclectika: Eclectika was born in 2001. Since this year till 2005 with the release of the Demo "Funeral Victorious March", the band was not very active. Then we wanted to evolve and be totally involved in music. We made two albums : "The Last Blue Bird" in 2007 and "Dazzling Dawn" in 2010.
In the beginning we made only bands covers. We played various covers from Theatre of Tragedy, Lacuna Coil, Cradle of Filth, Emperor, Metallica, The Gathering ...etc. Then we composed and integrated in our songs all these influences.
I.M: What would you say are the main musical influences behind the band?
E: The main influence is Metal. But we are listening to lot of Ambient, Classical Music and Soundtracks. Among the bands which are important for us, we can name: Emperor, The Gathering, Megadeth, Epica, Lunar Aurora, ...
I.M: “Dazzling Dawn” is the band’s latest full-length release. Can you tell us more about the concept and ideas behind this album?
E: "Dazzling dawn" references to rebirth. Its emblem is the phoenix which is symbolized in the booklet by the constellation of the phoenix. We carry a lot of importance for the imaging of space. This theme characterizes the dreamlike universe and eclectique of the band. Every track is independent and possesses its own subject. But the album forms a unity. The composition and the recording took place over two years and demanded from us a lot of investment. We draw our inspiration in all the moments of the life.
I.M: Why do you guys choose to have few songs in French and other songs in English?
E: We wrote our songs in English because it's the universal language. Furthermore it's more natural to sing in English than in French. In our language, the songs sound bad. But we are not good in English, when we write in this language we loose many precise meanings that we want to express. So we wrote some text in French in the booklet to give the real and accurate meaning of our ideas to our countrymen.
I.M: Eclectika’s music is labeled as Post-Black Metal and Experimental, how do you guys feel about this labels? How would you label Eclectika’s music?
E: I think it's very difficult to describe our own music. I label Eclectika's music as Metal and Ambient. It's very wide but our songs are eclectic. Terms Post Black Metal and Experimental are right I think. Anyway reviewers tag us with many words. It’s depending of the approach of everyone.
I.M: The French metal scene is known to be very closed and highly competitive between bands. Can you tell us your experience in this scene? Is it hard to get booked for shows and such?
E: Indeed the French Metal scene is not very active. There are lots of small bands but there is not a Metal culture in our country. There isn’t much competition between the Bands. On the contrary, there is a mutual aid. Regarding the shows, it's hard to find big shows. We can get booked for many small concerts but it's very confidential. There are not many people at these shows.
I.M: With so many musical ideas behind Eclectika, are there any other musical boundaries the band wants to explore in the future?
E: I think I have many ways to explore. I really want to mix lots of styles of music. The hard thing is to keep homogeneity and sensitivity. With Eclectika, I have no boundary but it's also difficult to interest people with such complex combination. We are aware that we affect only few people with our music.
I.M: With all the bands come out these days thanks to cheaper musical equipment and social networking sites like MySpace. What do you think is necessary for a band to have in order to make it in this business?
E: It's incontrovertible. The most difficult thing in 2010 is not to make music but it's the promotion. There are a lot of bands and the listeners have many choices. Social networks enable to offer our music quickly to anyone. But the most important is to create good music with honesty.
I.M: What do you think makes Eclectika standout from all the other bands playing Experimental/Post-Black Metal?
E: It's difficult to answer this question. We don't claim to revolutionize this genre. We play this music because we like it. We put all our passion in music. If our songs please to the listeners, it's the most important for us.
I.M: Anything else you want to add for the band’s followers in the USA and around the world?
E: Thanks a lot for the interview. Your readers can make their own opinion and listening our songs at www.eclectika.fr . Good continuation to your Webzine and see you for the next release!
