Unleashing waves of melancholy, today we have Denmark’s newcomers Maunah and their Satunus-meets-Hamferð with a bit of Post-Metal sound. On their debut release “Hjarta”, the band delivers six tracks of masterful music, full of emotion and heavy riffs. While there hasn’t been much innovation in the Doom genre and subgenres in a while, this band manages to create a unique sound that gives them their own identity, while still being familiar and accessible.

Opening with “Heimaland”, we get some traditional Doom riffs paired with the solemn vocals of Søren Sol Koldsen-Zederkof, while not as dramatic as Jón Aldará, he has a very hypnotic clean voice that fits very well the atmosphere and pace of the music. Things turn to Post-Metal territories on the crafty “Solin Vaugna”, a track that reminds us a bit of The Ocean in some places, with epic cathartic moments and engaging tempo changes and guitar leads.

As our favorite track in this release, the bleak “Theinajau”, features a slow-burning progression that culminates in a very dramatic fashion, giving us some Iotunn-esque vibes at times. There is something definitely unique about the band’s engaging vocal melodies that manage to pierce through the distorted guitars and playful drumming. Just when you think you have this release and the band figured out, they unleash “Saivr”, a track that has some pretty aggressive parts that shake things up.

Closing with the dramatic album title track, we are completely smitten by the band’s highly atmospheric and melancholic sound, that does not rely really on synths, samples, or gimmicks, but rather solid instrumentation, powerful riffs, and polished vocal melodies. Maunah is a very promising young band with a distinctive sound that blends in some of our favorite styles, so make sure you check them out if you like Doom, Post-Metal, and Melodic Death Metal to some extent.
