Moonspell - Far From God (2026)

Always keeping their sound fresh and engaging, today we have Portugal’s Moonspell and their latest opus “Far From God”. Featuring eight tracks and over 42-minutes of music, this release showcases the band’s ability to create a very dark and engaging atmosphere around catchiness. Five years have passed since “Hermitage”, and they have been worth the wait, as this is one of the band’s most dynamic and engaging releases.

Opening with the bombastic “Cross Your Heart”, which features the band’s quintessential guitar work alongside eerie atmospherics.. This track sets an extremely high bar, as it has everything we love about Moonspell and yet sounds fresh and explosive. Things only keep getting better and better with the pastoral atmospherics of the album title track, the sultry vocals of “Biblical”, and the overall darkness of “The Great Wolf in the Sky”. With the band upping the lush atmospherics, this album kicked off in style.

There is always some enigma to the band’s sound, as tracks like “Your Promise of Light” creates a very powerful and tense atmosphere mixed in with crafty clean and harsh vocals from Fernando Ribeiro. Every single element in this release has its moment, from the riffs in the opener to “For the Love of Mortals” and “Our Freedom to Fall”, to the ever present crafty percussion and dramatic atmospherics. Besides the opener, “Reconquista” is tied for our favorite track, thanks to its slow burning delivery and overall aural power.

Never disappointing, Moonspell has managed to unleash one of the freshest and most diverse Gothic/Dark Metal releases of the last few years. The band’s line-up continuity has allowed them to work as a well oiled machine for many decades now, and their sound is a testament of this. It never strays too far away, but it does experiment with new elements and directions. If you are a Moonspell fan, this is yet another triumphant release for their discography, so be sure to not miss out on it.
