Perfect for a gloomy cloudy evening, today we have Last Leaf Down and their latest opus “Weight of Silence”. Masterfully blending Post-Rock with Shoegaze elements, this Swiss outfit delivers ten tracks of highly emotional and melancholic music. With a mixture of elements from bands like EF, Tides from Nebula and Mono, this release is top notch from start to finish. Opening with the solemn and yet dreamy “Silence”, the band sets a very ethereal atmosphere filled with soaring guitars and moody vocals. The melancholic rollercoaster continues with excellent songs like “Cold Heart”, “Reach the Sun”, and “Illusion” that weave back and from cathartic moments to solemn slower passages, keeping this very ethereal and bleak. We particularly love the influence of bands like Katatonia and Slowdive that the band incorporates into their music. Our favorite tracks have to be “A Quiet Lost War”, and “Falling Sky”, two very powerful songs filled with lush guitar leads and very crafty tempos, creating a very immersive and somewhat hypnotic atmosphere, while always oozing melancholy. The band excels in creating very engaging melodies that while keeping the album vibe always going, still explore a wide palette of sounds and influences, like “Overtrust”, “The Ending”, and “Mislead” showcase. With a very engaging and carefully refined sound, Last Leaf Down continues to improve from their previous releases and manages to create the most powerful release to date. “Weight of Silence” is 42 minutes of pure melancholic magic and thanks to its immersive nature, it manages to transport the listener to new emotional heights. You can’t go wrong with such a well crafted release. |
