Unleashing a crafty old-school Swedish Death Metal debut, today we have Cryptorium and “Descent Into Luncay”. With a sound similar to bands like Grave, Centinex, old Entombed, and Dismember, these young guys definitely bring back the nostalgia and vibe of the good old late 90’s in the scene. If you are looking for a good meaty Death Metal release to headbang yourself to a chiropractor visit, this is definitely one to check out. Opening with “Incarcerated”, we instantly get that grimey old-school production that is characteristic of the genre, and gives the band a very raw and visceral sound. As “Horrid Exultation”, “Inner Decay”, and “A Distant Dream”, unleash their fuzzy guitars and crafty tempo changes, we get that old Entombed vibe alongside some sinister atmospherics. With a very barebones and punishing sound, Cryptorium does not rely on any gimmicks or flair, just plain attitude and uncompromising rawness as “Void of Life”, “Obscure Reality”, and “Mournful Dawn” steamroll the listener with more crafty riffing and engaging drumming onslaughts. Having seen many bands attempt this style over the years, it is quite refreshing to hear these guys getting it just right. Overall, “Descent into Lunacy” is one of those retro-sounding releases that are true to their nature and do not feel fake or forced. We are huge fans of old-school Swedish Death Metal and Cryptorium is bringing back that vibe with a vengeance. Each song in “Descent into Lunacy” is crusty and powerful enough to incite some furious headbanging, so be warned and be ready. Keep an eye out for these guys in the future. |
