Hailing from Finland, today we have a very interesting duo, Champions of Sorrow, with a crafty take on Symphonic Death Metal/Deathcore. On their debut EP, “The Night Makes Us”, this outfit delivers a Fleshgod Apocalypse-meets-Lorna Shore onslaught of 16 minutes of well crafted music filled with epic arrangements, crushing drumming, and hearty growls to keep things heavy. Opening with the lush “The Horde”, we get very fancy orchestrations leading the way alongside powerful drums and solid growls/snarls. The use of breakdowns is not as pronounced as on traditional Deathcore bands, but there are a few well crafted ones to create contrast between sections. As our favorite track, “Night Makes Us”, delivers more intricate layering of elements, and creates a more enveloping atmosphere, while delivering chaos, melody and crunchy Death Metal riffing, it can't get any better than this. Closing with the dramatic, “Faceless Mirror”, this release has shown enough promise to keep these guys in your radar. The EP is well crafted, the music is masterfully executed and produced, so a full length release is imminent from these guys. The growls will sound familiar and this is because they come from Ville Rutanen, from Red Moon Architect fame. If you are looking for heavy melodic Finnish stuff, this is a good addition to your collection. |
