Oranssi Pazuzu - Muuntautuja (2024)

cover

There is ‘normal’ experimental/weird music, and there is Oranssi Pazuzu weird, which is 100x more intense than the latter. Unleashing their sixth full-length release with “Muuntautuja”, the band goes down into the depths of hell and delivers seven unnerving tracks that are both intense and insane. Anybody familiar with the band would not expect anything less, and for nearly 45 minutes, they manage to push the boundaries of aural assaults with their music, creating one truly chaotic and ravaging release.

In no time, the band immediately grabs the listener with their hypnotic opener “Bioalkemisti”, a track that slowly lures them into the band’s madness. The hellish vocals and crafty samples work wonders until the deranged guitar work unleashes its magic. With the album title track we get an interesting ‘drum and bass’ core aligned with crazy samples and electronics to create a very bleak soundscape. If the listener is not smitten already, “Voitelu” and its creepy subtle keyboards allows the band to further expand the atmospheric madness of this release.

Going back to some crafty percussion and rhythms with “Hautatuuli”, the band focuses more on atmosphere in this minimalistic piece. In this release, we feel that Oranssi Pazuzu tried to constrain the sound to be a bit more targeted and less all-over-the-place, as songs like “Valotus” really keep the same type of momentum going thanks to wave of fuzzy distortion and more haunting keyboards amongst the droney chaos. Giving us chills and a bit of Ulver “Perdition City” vibes, the trip-hop-is “Ikikäärme” is certainly one of the most interesting and masterfully crafted tracks in this release.

Easing the listener back into reality with “Vierivä usva”, the band comes full circle with yet another impressive release that is both unnerving and brilliantly crafted. If you are looking for a weird and totally chaotic experience, this is certainly one of the best examples to find in 2024. Oranssi Pazuzu keeps pushing the envelope with their unique style and take on music, and has also greatly expanded their aural palette into weirder and crazier territories. Be warned that this is not your standard run-of-the-mill release, and be prepared to be pushed to the limit.
