Fleshgod Apocalypse - Obscura - Wolfheart - Thulcandra - Oriental Theatre - Denver, CO - 2/23/2022

Making our way to Denver was delayed due to bad weather in Colorado, but luckily this date was not postponed and the show went on. With plenty of tours making their way through North America, this package is definitely one of the most intense with such killer bands that Wolfheart and Thulcandra, are the ‘openers’. With a temperature hovering around 10 degrees fahrenheit, we made our way to the Oriental Theater to escape the cold and enjoy one intense evening.

Kicking-off the show we had Thulcandra and their tight Melodic Black/Death Metal sound that is reminiscent of Dissection in some songs. The band came on with a commanding attitude and delivered their music with proficiency and skill, thanks to mastermind and fearless leader Steffen Kummerer. The band is set to unleash a new album on May 19th, so make sure to keep an eye out for them.

Thulcandra setlist:

Deliverance in Sin and Death
Funeral Pyre
As I Walk Through the Gateway
Aeon of Darkness
Spirit of the Night

Next up we had Tuomas Saukkonen and company delivering their crafty Finnish Melodic Death Metal. This band relentlessly tours North America, as we have seen them recently for their latest release “King of the North”. With a short but powerful set, the band has a wide variety of albums to pick their music from and their focus this evening was a bit on the heavier side, creating an active moshpit and even had an overly eager fan throw a bag of doritos at them. Tuomas took it in stride and still continued to deliver a hell of a set.

Wolfheart setlist:

Skyforger
Ghost of Karelia
Aeon of Cold
The King
Breakwater
The Hammer

Handling double duty, Steffen Kummerer came back out with Obscura and its ‘newly’ revamped but older line-up we haven’t seen live before. Being huge fans of the band we were looking forward to seeing Kummerer and Christian Münzner deliver some sweet intricate guitar solos and duos and they certainly delivered. The band’s sound was quite polished and the songs sounded wonderfully live, something we are quite snobbish about when seeing technically proficient bands live.

Obscura setlist:

Forsaken
Emergent Evolution
Devoured Usurper
A Valediction
Akróasis
Solaris
The Anticosmic Overload
Ocean Gateways
When Stars Collide

Closing the evening we had Italy’s Fleshgod Apocalypse and their bombastic Symphonic/Technical Death Metal. The band has been polishing their sound over the years and have been successfully touring North America for a few years as we have seen them in the past with Epica and Hypocrisy. Now co-headlining this tour, the band took the stage with their signature stage presence and delivered a very intense and highly energetic performance. We particularly love how the band mixes operatic female vocals with their very aggressive sound, creating a very engaging and powerful mix.

Fleshgod Apocalypse setlist:

Fury
Healing Through War
Sugar
No
Minotaur (The Wrath of Poseidon)
Monnalisa
The Violation
The Fool
Epilogue
The Forsaking
