Hailing from Canada, today we have Death/Doom outfit Norlisk and their latest EP “Beyond the Mountains”. Since this is released through Hypnotic Dirge Records, you know this is going to be a good one. Featuring a retro but firm sound, the band unleashes two tracks filled with slow and crushing riffs alongside hefty growls. If you are a fan of My Dying Bride, Mournful Congregation, etc., you will definitely dig this one. Opening with “Beyond the Horizon”, the band sets a very old-school vibe with raw and unadorned Death/Doom Metal, with some hints of shifting more towards Funeral Death/Doom. Anyways, the band's riffs are powerful and the slow and mournful growls perfectly fit the mournful drumming pace. The band shifts things up a bit and goes more melancholic and punishing with the excellent “Intro Officium Triste (Pt II) - Mountains of Depressiveness”, a piece that slowly builds up thanks to crafty guitar leads and engaging tempo changes. Overall, the two tracks presented here give us a great insight into what Norilsk is capable of. If you like old school Death/Doom Metal, check these guys out! |
