Inferno Festival Norway 2022 - Day 4 - 4/17/2022

The finish line is sadly finally here as the festival ends on today, Sunday. However, we are treated to some more bucket list bands like: Myrkskog, and others that we greatly enjoy watching live like: Whoredom Rife and the sound alchemists of Oranssi Pazuzu. Being able to get a good night’s sleep, we managed to sneak in some activities around town like checking out the new Munch Museum and our traditional climb of the Oslo Opera building. One thing to note is that the festival also partners with some local companies to offer paid tours around the city or the surrounding areas, including some nice hikes or cultural experiences.

After spending a couple hours with friends, we made our way to the Rockefeller venue for one last day of awesomeness. First up, we had one of our favorite bands Whoredom Rife and their crushing Black Metal. We like all kinds of variants of BM, but their raw and in-your-face style reminds us of One Head, One Tail and similar outfits. The band nicely delivered their crushing set to a well-attended audience, something that is interesting of shows in Norway/Sweden, unlike in other countries that not a lot of people usually show up for the openers.

We made our way to John Dee out of curiosity to check out Eridu from Germany, and we managed to be nicely surprised of their ‘Oriental’ Extreme Metal style. The band has solid stage presence and the opening fire show surely gained them some new fans.

Oranssi Pazuzu is one of those unique bands that is completely bonkers and yet captivating and unique. We particularly enjoy the ridiculous amounts of electronics they setup on stage in order to create their hypnotic sound. Having seen the band both in small stages in the USA and huge stages like at Soulcrusher 2021, their energy is undeniable, and the weirdness of their style is just amazing. Definitely one of the highlights of the festival for us.

Having evaded us over the years, Myrkskog is one of those old-school bands that we haven’t seen before, so it was one of the first ones in the festival’s bill that I was attracted to. The band wastes no time in decimating the crowd with their high level of intensity and the devastating nature of their music. Celebrating the 20 years of the release of “Superior Massacre”, the band leveled the crowd with some of their choice favorites.

Making our way down to John Dee for one last time, Dyscarnate and their Tech Death Metal tore the roof of the place. We haven’t heard much from this band before, but their cohesive stage presence and crushing music made quite an impression on us, and definitely the crowd that was furiously headbanging from start to finish. We even managed to capture that intensity in our pictures below.

Sadly, since we must leave at 4:40 AM for the airport on Monday, as ‘responsible adults’ we had to go to bed early. So, we made an executive decision of checking out Kreator as the closer (for us) of the event as we have seen Taake plenty of times before. Kreator is one of those bands that before we see them live we are not huge fans of, but every live show they give they lure us back to their fold. Having pyro and newer members (from the last time we saw then), this band sure knows how to rock and deliver hits from their ample catalog that spans many years.

As a whole, Inferno 2022 was one of the best running festivals we have attended in quite a while. It was also a highly anticipated return that ran without a hitch. While it is expensive to attend festivals in Scandinavia, the Metal culture here is quite unique as people actually appreciate the concerts and watch and behave normally. Not many instances of people having their phones up filming the set, or being obnoxious while drunk, happened to us here in comparison to other places. As we get older, we appreciate peaceful festivals were people do their thing and let others do their thing, which is exactly what Inferno is all about. Good music, perfect sound, cold beer, and friendly people are our biggest take-aways from this excellent event. Thanks to the organizers at Inferno (Runar Pettersen) for hooking us up with accreditations for this event and making this coverage possible.
