Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin Kynsi (2020)

cover

Unleashing a highly mysterious and depraved orgasmic aural assault, today we have Finnish outfit Oranssi Pazuzu and their highly expected fifth full-length release “Mestarin Kynsi”. Having sonically abused all their fans for the last decade, the band continues their musical exploration with 51 minutes of music spread in six captivating tracks. If you think the band was weird and trippy in the past, wait until you listen to this release.

Opening with the trance-inducing “Ilmestys”, the band slowly builds up and introduces their funky mixture of effects, sickening vocals and crushing guitar work. If the first track didn’t create enough anxiety in the listener, “Tyhjyyden sakramentti” continues the aural exploration with chaotic ravaging passages filled with weird distortions and an overall sense of urgency that creates a very demoralizing and brutal atmosphere.

The band’s experimental nature allows tracks like “Uusi teknokratia” to feel connected to the band’s core sound, and yet worlds apart as the underlying bass guitar links them, but the overall atmospherics are quite unique and different. We particularly enjoy the cinematic vibe of songs like “Oikeamielisten” and “Kuulen ääniä maan alta”, where the listener is guided into very tense territories as the tempo is picked up and the distortions amplify the bizarreness of the vocals. The band does a great job in crafting intricate and yet very chaotic melodies that are nicely developed as the songs progress.

Saving the most intense for last, “Taivaan portti” perfectly closes such a unique and aurally abusive release. The band continue to push the boundaries of Black Metal with tons of experimental and psychedelic elements while crafting one of the most crushing and powerful atmospheres in the scene. If you liked their previous work, you will love this release. If you are about to be initiated into Oranssi Pazuzu, this will be an intense journey to start with.
