Packed with tons of great releases, this 2018 fall also gives us a brand new Sylvaine album. Filled with her characteristic charisma and angelic vocals, “Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone” is another brilliant step in her career which features a more consolidated sound and plenty of memorable songs. The combination of fragility, craftsmanship and occasional burst of aggression make this release one of the best albums of 2018. Opening with the album title track, Sylvaine slowly builds up with an intense bass guitar line that leads into dreamy vocal arrangements a very melancholic pace. The track continues with some brilliant instrumental passages that feel exploratory in nature, but very well fitting to the overall mood of the song. The Shoegazey/Post-Rock-y vibe arrives in full force with “Mørklagt” a very lush track that explores the more ethereal side of Sylvaine’s music, but not without some heavier sections thrown into the mix. The playful “Abeyance” has a more dream pop edge to it, with some crafty instrumentation, but keeps it heavy with harsh vocals overlayed on top of fragile Shoegaze passages. Our personal favorite track in this release is the mesmerizing “Worlds Collide”, and its superbly atmosphere. This track very slowly builds up as it brings the listener into a state of trance with very well layered vocal melodies and minimal instrumentation. To get out of the hypnotic trance, “Severance” is probably the most intense song of this release with fierce Black Metal outbursts that nicely collide with more dreamy passages. Just when you don’t want things to end, “L'Appel du Vide” closes the album in a very solemn way. Again, this track experiments with a more atmospheric and Shoegaze-y vibe, allowing the listener to settle and prepare to relive this experience once more. Sylvaine has come a long way since her debut “Silent Chamber, Noisy Heart”, consolidating her sound even further in this album. While there are some clear external musical influences, “Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone” feels more authentic and carves a path on its own. Do not miss out on one of the best dreamy/atmospheric releases of 2018. |
