cover

Arriving from Australia via India’s Transcending Obscurity records, today we have Somnium Nox and their crushing debut release “Terra Inanis”. Unleashing a powerful mixture of devastating Black Metal with tons of atmospheric elements, the band delivers nearly 30 minutes of powerful music that should not be ignored.

Perfectly setting the mood with the first few minutes of the opener “Soliloquy of Lament” being atmospheric, the band fully unleashes their fury with some killer ravaging Black Metal onslaughts. Sounding like a mixture of Wolves in the Throne Room and Wiegedood, the band’s level of brutality is unquestionable.

The release continues with the more mellow “The Alnwick Aphotheosis”, a more lush and engaging track that perfectly blends crushing furiously paced onslaughts with melancholic and atmospheric passages. Showcasing their song writing creativity, this song gives you the chills thanks to all the atmospheric elements that make it quite creepy and unsettling. Saving the best for last, “Transcendental Dysphoria” allows the release to come full circle with a magical build-up which captures the essence of the band. This track has it all, from sinister guitar riffs, to soul crushing vocals, to perfectly crafted drums.

Overall, “Terra Inanis” is one hell of a release the showcases the band’s raw talent and unique take on the genre. Even throwing in some didgeridoos into the mix, the level of atmospheric brilliance achieve by Somnium Nox is very unique and rare this days. If you are a fan of the genre, be sure to not miss such an impressive release.
