Umbah – Trilobeth (2010)

cover

Every once in a while we get a release that makes us think: What the fuck was the band thinking?. The majority of the time this is in a bad way, a clear example is “Trilobeth” from Umbah. This release feels as disconnected as a bunch of tracks pieced together by a baby playing with Pro-Tools.

We must say that if originality is what you look for then you will be blown away by “Trilobeth” since we never heard something quite like this. But if you are actually looking for music with structured songs and a logical flow then you will hate this album.

If you are wondering how weird and deranged this album is, we will do our best in describing what we hear in this release. First you have some jazzy elements here and there, then some growls, then some weird samples, some random riffs here and there, then some more sampled drums and beats, add on top some spaced out vocals and you have the basic idea of what each song features.

All of the elements mentioned above are mixed in the most weird and sometimes (we think) random way possible. There are some basic structures here and there, but they never last more than one minute or so before the next round of experimentation happens.

Maybe we are too narrow-minded, and we just don’t get it, but after all the music we have listened over the years, we can chalk it up to just plain bad release. We can’t help but wonder why labels are releasing this crap, and how is it possible that somebody can come up with such a deranged release.

If you are looking for mind-bending there-is-no-spoon shit, you should check “Trilobeth” out. But if you are a more traditional mind that likes something more organized stuff then just skip this release all together. Some beats and parts are cool, but nothing too concrete to have a good appreciation for them.
