Svarti Loghin – Drifting Through The Void (2010)

cover

When I first started listening to this album and the intro song “Red Sun Sets” was over, I thought I had the wrong promo on my playlist since the band’s music sounded like a demo tape for a Coldplay/U2 song. The guitars were rough and the percussions were too calm from what I expected from a BM band, then minute 1:50 hits and there are some weird Bono style vocals that made me double check that I was listening to Svarti Loghin and not some shitty U2 album that somebody sneaked into my computer.

After the initial shock, I went to the band’s myspace and found out that in fact that is how the album starts. If I would have waited 30 seconds more I would have heard the shrieks and all I would know I had the right album. As you can expect, Svarti Loghin plays a very interesting sounding Black Metal that will surely shock a bunch of people if you are expecting furious blastbeats and incontrollable shrieks for desperation.

The band could be described as a very emotional Black Metal band, the feeling given by the band’s “Drifting Through The Void” release is perfectly described on the albums title. Svarti Loghin does great job in creating simple and haunting atmospheres, and you will have to listen to this album more than once in order to fully get the effect that the band is trying to create.

Yes, the music sometimes sounds like Coldplay or U2’s rough demo’s but there is a clear difference. The song’s structures are meant to be depressive, the production (we suspect) is meant to be shitty sounding; all this creates a very unique atmosphere. Comparison to other Atmospheric/Depressive Black Metal band is un-avoidable, but I also believe there are many passages that sound likes of the caliber of Alcest, Wolves In The Throne Room and similar.

All music is very well composed and features a brilliant Post-Rock / Shoegaze influences merged with some Black Metal style shrieks and a lot of experimentation. This makes this album more of a unique piece that will take the un-experienced listener a few spins and a very open mind to fully digest.

The song that carries the album title is probably the most experimental in the release, since it features some clean vocals that sound like Pearl Jam mixed with some Country, bit it also has an Alternative Rock sound to it, making it a very unique sounding piece. We like the experimentation effort, but for us it killed the flow of the album, if this track was number 8 and not number 4, this release would have kept a more natural flow.

If you are looking for a very depressive release look no further “Drifting Through The Void” is probably one of the best of 2010 in this category. The band does a great job in creating a bleak atmosphere that will accompany you on a rainy cloudy afternoon and will provide a soundtrack for all your dark thoughts.
