Hailing from France we have Les Discrets, a very unique band that makes it nearly impossible for us to define their musical style. Featuring a rich palette of influences ranging from Progressive Rock to Post-Rock to Shoegaze to Alternative Metal with a splash of Folk, we have one of the most unique sounds to ever be signed by Prophecy Productions (and if you know your music, you know this label is responsible for acts such as Empyrium, Autumblaze, The Vision Bleak, etc). Featuring songs the band wrote in a span of six years, you can see how this band started with a very solid musical foundation and only refined it to near perfection. “Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées” is one of the best albums we have reviewed in 2010. The band has done a great job in polishing their own sound and laying down some amazing tracks over the year. The variation of styles within the songs is superb, but the best thing is how the songs are different from each other. Acoustic songs like “Sur les quais” change the pace of the album drastically in a good way. Followed by ‘metallic’ songs with amazing slow passages create a great musical flow in this album. The clean vocals on this release are superb, and they work wonders when paired with their female counter part. This vocal paring is never abused and provides that extra kick to the songs that feature it. Some vocal FX’s are used here and there, but they only add richness to the songs, and they never sound overdone. If you think that all the music is ‘calm’, and if you are a metal head you will be passing out you are very wrong. The band features guitar and drumming sections that make it seem like the band will bust out with some blastbeats and Black Metal shrieks. However, the band never goes to these extremes, there are definitely Metal/Rock influences in this release but they never get ‘brutal’, something which would just ruin the beauty behind the band’s enigmatic sound. If you like bands like Noekk, Anathema, and similar, you will love Les Discrets. We think the band has done a magical job at creating a highly emotional album that oozes emotions mixed with amazing music. We would greatly recommend that you go and get this release, specially the beautiful Art-book version of it. |
