Hailing from Germany we have Varg, a new coming band into the very competitive and crowded Pagan Metal genre. “Blutaar” is the band’s second full-length release and it shows great maturity in their music, making it a very strong sophomore effort. The band currently on the line-up of the European Pagan Fest shows their skills at creating aggressive Pagan Metal songs that will surely have people moshing from beginning to end. While other bands of the genre focus more on having different instruments used in their music, Varg emphasizes on using a straight forward powered by aggressive guitar riffs and elaborate drumming. If you take out the typical epic battle riffs from the band music, you would have a straight forward Melodic Black Metal band, and this is something we truly live about this band. You don’t have many things making the music ‘pretty’, you get an ‘in your face’ aggression from minute one, and it’s great. Like we mentioned, the riffing is great and so are the solos presented scattered around the songs. The drumming is bestial and sounds extremely Black Metal like, unlike other bands that tone them down to sound more melodic in turn. The vocals are top notch and their aggressive edge makes them a perfect fit for the music this band presents. While the band’s music is basic and rudimentary it sounds a lot like a more aggressive version of Moonsorrow and similar bands. You wont find any use of keyboard or anything fancy here, just straight up Pagan Metal that will rock you from your seat. Varg has created a very solid release in “Blutaar” that create a very aggressive battle feeling and would make you go out and dust your old swords (c’mon most of you at least have one medieval weapon in your houses) and run around your house wielding them like during an epic battle. If you are looking for a very powerful and melodic Pagan Metal release look no further and start listening to “Blutaar”. If you are a fan of the genre and are having a hard time deciding which album to but. Get this one since for sure it will please the most demanding fans of the genre. |
