In terms of Death Metal, Americans have been showing the world how it’s done in the past 20 years. And Immolation’s “Majesty and Decay” is another fine example of why this gene was so popular and has not gone away in the States. “Majesty and Decay” features an Immolation, that like wine, it’s only getting better with age. The band has never lost it’s edge and every release they put out is around the same level as the last one. Something extremely rare in the DM scene since you have the ‘big players’ of the scene like Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under releasing shit albums every once in a while. The relentless riffing is our favorite thing about Immolation, every album features a wide variety of riffs and they never get repetitive or super boring. Guitarist Bob Vigna has great creativity when it comes to creating catchy riffs that will have metal heads head banging from start till end, if you don’t believe us, go to a live show and you will see. If we had to bet why this band has been so consistent since the beginning we would have to say that it’s because their main core: Bob Vigna and vocalist/bass player Ross Dolan have been with the band since the beginning. If you have a solid core then you are guaranteed a steady band that will only improve over time. The vocals are as brutal as every, with the traditional deep growls of DM, you could not as for anybody to be better than Ross Dolan. We specially love that the band keeps getting better, but without the need of any drastic changes. We like timeless bands (if they are good at what they do), like My Dying Bride and such, that have not changed their style much (or at all) but they still manage to put out great albums that sound fresh and yet bring the nostalgia of the old days back. Rounding up the exemplary work of Dolan and Vigna, we have a very solid drum track that gives the music the extra kick when needed but it can be blended into the background when the guitar solos and riffs are taking over. In general “Majesty and Decay” is a great Death Metal album that shows that there is still a lot of DM to be played. Immolation has been a sure bet over the years and this 2010 they don’t disappoint at all. |
