Sybreed – The Pulse Of Awakening (2010)

cover

Calling the music of Sybreed complex is a complete understatement of what the band does with “The Pulse Of Awakening”, their third full-length in their 7 years of existence. The mixture of elements in this album is as long as the list of ice cream flavors Baskin Robbins has.

Analyzing the band by layers, we can see the main underlying Metal foundation the band has, but it’s not just a regular ‘plain and simple’ Metal foundation. The band chooses to use very complex time signatures and polyrhythmic composition in the vein of Meshuggah, Xerath, etc.

Another layer is the vocals; they vary from harsh Black Metal style vocals, to clean synth-rock style vocals, to using vocal fx’s. So this provides us with a very rich sounding album that has a specific style for every mood that the band features on their songs. And all of these styles are perfectly mixed within the songs.

Then we have the electronics layer, where you have the electro influences in the songs, and the some more synth-pop/rock elements. This creates a very interesting sound that not many bands have, and makes this album and the band’s sound appealing to a broader audience.

As you can imagine “The Pulse Of Awakening” is a very complex album that you have to listen to for plenty of times before being able to fully digest it, understand it, and enjoy it. However, for the occasional listener, it will provide a very rich listening experience that will surely get them hooked on the band.

I must say that after a few listens I was completely unsure about this album, but when paying close attention you can find all the smaller details that go into this band’s unique sound and learn to appreciate it.  And you won’t only appreciate this album because of its technical complexities, but because of the overall sound the band manages to achieve. There are probably no other bands that feature all these elements put together, and pull of a very engaging release.

We never paid much attention to this band until “The Pulse Of Awakening” and now we will go back and dig up this band’s older albums since they are quite like nobody else. Sybreed’s sound is a brilliant combination of technical Metal elements and other elements of different genres that create a beautiful palette of rich sounds that flow in full harmony during the duration of this album. So give this release a try and you will not be disappointed in one bit.
