Coronatus – Fabula Magna (2009)

cover

To say that Coronatus is one of the most underrated bands in the Gothic Metal genre is an understatement by it self. I don’t now why this band does not have as much recognition like Delain, Tristania, Leaves’ Eyes, Theatre Of Tragedy, etc. Coronatus is clearly a superior band that half of the ones mentioned and their musical sound is still Gothic Metal, no commercial bullshit here.

Hailing from Germany Coronatus has been very productive band since they got their deal with Massacre Records producing one album a year since 2007. The band’s approach to Gothic Metal is very traditional: heavy distorted guitars, majestic keyboards and the most amazing female vocal duo.

All songs in “Fabula Magna” showcase the band’s maturity in songwriting abilities, something that many Gothic Metal bands lack. The band’s sound has not evolved much but the epicness of their compositions has reached a very high place with this latest album. Most songs are sang in German, and takes a little away for the international listener, but since their vocals are so amazing they could be singing about flying elephants and I would not give a damn.

The vocal duo captured my attention since the band’s 2007 album “Lux Noctis” and now I can only say that they have reached perfection. On one side you have the more classical sounding voice and on the other the more innocent natural sounding vocals. I love this mix and both female vocalists are equally talented and have a great range. Another aspect that makes me want to see this band live so bad, it’s how would this look on stage!, like any straight man’s wet dream (and I say this will all due respect).

The music is very catchy and well composed, while it’s mainly driven by arrangements of either keyboards or choirs, the atmosphere is great since it gives that dark and majestic feeling that only a few bands can create. But also the Metal aspect of this band is evident in every second of this album with pounding guitar lines and tight drumming.

I must say that being a late addition to the already impressive list of Gothic Metal releases of 2009, “Fabula Magna” is a brilliant album that showcases Coronatus abilities in creating enchanting music. This album will definitely be on my top 10 list for Gothic Metal albums of 2009.
