Vetus Obscurum - Blood Revelations (2009)

cover

Who ordered a cup of bad and uninspired Black Metal?, apparently Debemur Morti did when signing up to release “Blood Revelations”. This is another example of a band that sounds amazing on paper: Dario Derna from Abazagorath, Evoken, Funebrarum, etc on ALL instruments, Herb Burke (Drawn and Quartered) on ‘omega’ voice and Mike Nihilist (ex-Abazagorath, etc) on the ‘alpha’ voice.

All of these names sound good on paper, but then you actually listen to the album you see that things don’t quite work out that way. Maybe it’s the annoying ‘out in the woods’ shitty sound with the intention of sounding more grim and ‘evil’. It can also be the aimless direction most songs take making them feel like bits and pieces pasted together for the sake of releasing something.

The vocal dance between ‘omega’ and ‘alpha’ is not even that impressive considering if you get a good vocalist that can do both DM and BM style and layer the tracks you would get the same result (and maybe even better). The riffs are very plain and over abused going into endless cycles, making me want to go back an listen to White Mice or something like that.

While the album has a few moments here and there that have actual Black Metal ‘credibility’, they get destroyed by the next uninspired bit that was pasted next to them, breaking the whole momentum. I must say that I was very disappointed when I heard this album.

If you like your BM to be chaotic (and not in a good way) then this album is definitely for you, but if you like some structure and substance in your music then just steer clear from this train wreck and check out the other recent Debemur Morti releases. The only thing I can say that I liked about this album is that is short.
