Secrets Of The Moon – Privilegivm (2009)

cover

“Privilegivm” is one of the weirdest sounding albums I have reviewed in the past few weeks, since the music is Black Metal, but has a different sound than most Black Metal releases that I’ve reviewed. But this does not mean the albums is band, all the opposite, I find it very fresh sounding in comparison to more ‘traditional’ albums.

Secrets Of The Moon hails from Germany and have been playing music since the late nineties, and for “Privilegivm” being their 4th full album they have done a pretty good job creating their own sound and exploding it as much as they can.

The band’s guitar sound has a very dirty feeling to it, and this is one of the things that makes the bands music different, since its intentional. The guitar melodies throughout the album are different and sometimes have the ‘traditional BM’ sound but other times they have an old school Death/Trash vibe to them.

Vocal wise, this album is far from the shrieking and howling Black Metal releases I’ve heard this year, it’s a more mature scream that is consistent in all songs and fits the music’s dense sound to perfection.

The rest of the music is pretty average, but does feature very interesting tempo changes here and there and during those slowdowns the music’s atmosphere gets denser and very interesting. I find this very amazing that the band can do so much atmospheric job with basic instruments and keep it up for the whole album.

In the last two tracks the band goes off the reservation by presenting a very ‘ambient like’ track called “Descent” and then “Sepherd” that sound a bit Doom/Sludge with clean vocals, something very different from the rest of the album.

If you are looking for a solid release that is different, look no further and get “Privilegivm” since it features 9 tracks of super quality that are very diverse in nature but are still cohesive enough to make the whole album flow perfectly.  Secrets Of The Moon have released one of the most diverse albums I’ve heard this year, and I think this band can pull off something like this almost perfectly.
