Glorior Belli - Meet Us At The Southern Sign (2009)

After listening to the big shit sandwich that “Revelations Of The Black Flame” from 1349 came out to be, I was glad that I was reviewing this album next.

Glorior Belli is a 3 man French band that provides us with 50 minutes of well produced Raw Black Metal, and I say this because the production on this album is excellent, almost capturing the extreme rawness that badly produced Raw Black Metal usually has.

While “Meet Us At The Southern Sign” will not win Glorior Belli any award for originality, it gets the job done with brutality and style. The band has been refining their music sound since their first full length album and has achieved almost nirvana with this release.

The guitar riffs while typical Black Metal sounding have great intensity and are perfectly composed to give that diabolical feeling to the songs, listen to “Swamp That Shame” if you don’t understand what I’m talking about. The atmosphere created by these repetitive riffs is one of the reasons I keep listening to raw Black Metal in the first place, since it’s usually bone chilling and perfect for the style of music. Also the blues like undertones in the guitar work gives this band an extra dimension that many bands could only wish they had.

The drum track is very brutal and fast, with amazing double kicks and blast beats, they are top notch in my book. The vocals are very standard with the occasional clean parts that are very well mixed within the songs.

One thing that took my by surprise is the Southern Metal sounding “There Is But One Light” since it sounds odd in a Black Metal album, but gives variety to this release and it’s very well executed and the band did a good job into incorporating their characteristic sound to this style of music.

After reviewing a very bad release from a high profile band, I’m very pleased to know that there are ‘newer’ bands doing a great job in releasing brutal Black Metal albums to keep all the fans of the genre satisfied and head banging as usual. Get this release since Glorior Belli has been improving since day one, and they can only get more evil and brutal in the future.
