Visions of Atlantis – Old Routes – New Waters (2016)

cover

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to hit the rest button, and this is exactly what Thomas Caser did with his band. Bringing back some of the band’s old members and a couple of new vocalists, Visions of Atlantis returns with a fresh lineup and a new lease on life. The EP “New Waters” features five classic songs from the band’s discography, re-recorded with the new members in order to test the waters.

Opening with the amazing epic “Lovebearing Storm” from the band’s debut 2002 release “Eternal Endless Infinity”, we instantly get a glimpse of the killer chemistry between new vocalists Siegfried Samer and Clémentine Delauney. The song also sounds revitalized more dramatic keyboards and a clear mix.

The super catchy “Lost” from the band’s sophomore release is also give the re-recording treatment and comes out being quite sharp and equally catchy and engaging with its brilliant chorus section. Our personal favorite, the dramatic “Winternight” (from the same sophomore release) sounds quite well with the new female singer, as she gives it a different edge with her more refined and trained vocals.

This version of the bombastic “Seven Seas”, delivers intricate melodies and lush vocal arrangements, thanks to the new singers, all while the keyboards take an elevated role and make the song even more dynamic and explosive. The only song that we didn’t quite like in this album was the new rendition of “Last Shut of Your Eyes”, which was already perfect when this track first came out.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, should be the rule for covers and re-recordings, but in general, “Old Routes – New Waters” is a great teaser to what is next to come from Visions of Atlantis. While some people might resent that some of the songs that the band’s original vocalist Nicole Bogner  have been re-recorded, we can certify that they are done quite well and work wonders with Clémentine Delauney on vocals. If you like the band’s previous releases, this should provide a nice insight into the new incarnation of the band and make you impatient for any upcoming release.
