Siculicidium – Lélekösvény (2015)

cover

Hailing from Romania, today we have Siculicidium and the 2015 Sun & Moon Records re-release of their 2007 EP “Lélekösvény”. As the legitimate spreaders of Transylvanian Black Metal, this band delivers nine crushingly raw hymns that sound like a mixture of Immortal, Dark Throne, Satyricon, amongst others.

Opening with the raw fuzziness of “Az Erdõ Szelleme: we instantly settle into a very low-fi quality release that is pretty visceral and in your face. The brutal intensity of tracks like “Lelkem Némasága” and “Ösvények, Csillagok” remind us of the old days of Osmose and Moonfog Productions releases of unknown bands that had a competition of who had the most ravaging and authentic low-quality production. The band’s musical core is quite competent and manages to create intricate songs that are quite appealing and are far from dated by today’s standards.

The album switches gears as “A Nap És A Hold” serves as an intermission and returns with “A Blackened Desire” on a more Black’n’Roll vibe with some impressive guitar abuse. The very metallic sounding distortion is a classic and it sounds amazing in the later song and on “Eastern Smell of Death”, which incidentally is our favorite melodic piece in this release. Featured as extra tracks in this re-release, the covers “A magyarok nyilaitól ments meg uram minket!” (from Angel Reaper) and “Öld meg Isten szolgáját!” (from Fantom) have a spunky punk vibe to them keeping things very simple and raw.

Overall, Siculicidium is a band that will appeal to people that like the most foul and sinister variants of Black Metal. It has a very raw and dissonant presentation that might push some people away, but under the clunky exterior, the band delivers some serious punch with their crafty music. If you like raw and demolishing BM from the early 90’s this is one re-release you can’t miss.
