The Agonist + Eluveitie – 9/25/2015 – The Regency Ballroom, San Francisco, CA

With the unfortunate news that Epica had to drop off the tour, Martina Edoff, The Agonist and Eluveitie continued to trek forward. Compensating for the loss of a headliner, Eluveitie stepped up and delivered nearly 2 hours of music, more than pleasing all their fans.

Driving up to San Francisco we encountered a traffic jam from hell (thanks highway 101) that made us miss the entire set of Martina Edoff. Luckily we arrived just in time as The Agonist was taking the stage.

Canadian outfit The Agonist arrived on this tour on the heels of their 2015 release “Eye of Providence”. The band has also just changed singers with Vicky Psarakis coming in for Alissa White-Gluz who left for Arch Enemy. Never being our cup of tea, the band did a pretty solid job in having people go crazy and start moshing at some points during their set. The band’s vocalist has a striking resemblance with Alissa in terms of stage movements and crowd interaction, allowing the band’s fans to feel at ease and enjoy their set.

The Agonist set list:

Thank You, Pain
Gates of Horn and Ivory
Danse Macabre
Panophobia
Business Suits and Combat Boots
Dead Ocean
The Tempest (The Siren's Song; The Banshee's Cry)
The Escape
Follow the Crossed Line

Building great expectation as all of the band’s instruments were placed on stage and a brief sound check went underway, Eluvetie arrived in full-force with all eight band members. The band’s unique Folk Metal style has drawn thousands to the genre, and as one of the most visible bands in the scene, they drew a pretty large crowd at the Regency.  Playing songs ranging from their newest to latest releases, and with a good number of them being from “Helvetios” and their previous two releases, the band got the crowd going since the first minute with people getting very excited and greatly enjoying the show.

Covering for Epica and not wanting to give a short show to paying fans, the band came back for a few acoustic songs, and then again for another ‘Metal set’ finally delivering their most popular track “A Rose for Epona”. As a band, Eluveitie delivered a very exciting and diverse show. All band members are very engaged and move around the stage constantly, making everybody feel like a part of the show. Anna Murphy’s vocals are as angelic as on the album’s and she greatly brings a different dimension to the band’s music when she takes the helm of the show.
