Old Witch – Come Mourning Come (2014)

cover

Finally reaching a wider audience, today we have Old Witch and their chilling debut full-length “Come Mourning Come”, re-released on Sun & Moon Records. With 36 minutes of aural savagery, this American band manages to release a highly dissonant and punishing release that will appeal to all fans of the intersection between Black/ Doom Metal / Noise / Drone.

The album opens with the throbbing “Funeral Rain” and its thick droning sounds and hellish atmospheric keyboards. Like something straight out of the movie “Event Horizon”, this song sets a very sinister mood for the rest of the album. The band spares no expense and creates a truly bizarre and sickening atmosphere with “This Land Has Been Cursed” and “God ov Wolves”, expertly continuing their decadent musical spew through nearly the first half of this release.

Changing the mood a bit with the instrumental “Leaves Fall in Autumn”, we are treated to a bleak song that perfectly builds up the tension for the sickly catchy “The Frost and the Tyrant”. Here the tribal-esque drumming and the punishing riffs are perfectly accentuated by the hellish vocals and keyboard undertones. The bands punishing riffing once again captures your attention as it perfectly morphs under the drone elements that are incorporated.

Saving the best (and longest) track for last, “Olde Spyrits Haunt the Thickets”, takes its time to get into the listener’s psyche and perturb his thoughts. As a whole, “Come Mourning Come” showcases a very disturbing band that excels at creating highly atmospheric music that will rattle your soul. If you are looking for a Doomier version of Ash Borer, Old Witch is the band that will fill that void for you.
