Marking Van Canto’s triumphant return, today we have “Dawn of the Brave”, the band’s fifth full-length release. For all the people that feel appalled by the band’s interpretation of Metal, should really get over it and start embracing the sheer talent showcases by the band’s unique approach and uber catchy songs. Featuring 13 tracks, 10 own songs and 4 covers, this release is packed with killer (vocal) solos and majestic melodic arrangements. After opening with the intense ‘orchestral’ intro “Dawn of the Brave”, the band immediately moves into their comfort zone with the epic “Fight for your Life”. With a style akin to Power Metal, the band immediately creates very epic vocal arrangements that after a few minutes you won’t even notice they are lacking all instruments, except the drums. As the album progresses, the tracks continue to gradually get more epic and intense, a perfect example of this is the monumental “To the Mountains”, “Badaboom”, and “Steelbreaker”. We particularly love how well all vocalists complement each other, from the leads of Sly and Inga to the lows and solos of Stefan and Ross. Since the first time we heard the band they continue to amuse us with their creative style and high-energy music, perfect to headbang any day of the week. In terms of the traditional cover songs, “The Final Countdown” and “Paranoid” take the cake with their creative (and excellent) interpretations. As an epic song, “The Final Countdown” propelled Europe to immortality and Van Canto does a killer job in keeping the bone-chill inducing epicness of this track. Other covers include a Lord of the Rings track “Into the West” and a Bonnie Tyler song “Holding Out For a Hero”. If you are still unsure of the band, this is by far their most compact and high-octane release they have put out. We love the covers, but the band’s own music is very well crafted and epic. Featuring a very unique and unconventional approach to Metal, Van Canto is still a force to be reckoned with and we are sure that more and more Metalheads start noticing the talent behind the band and enjoy their music each day. |
