Yith – Demo 3 (2013)

cover

Bringing back the days of tape trading and home-made demos, today we have Yith and ‘their’ “Demo 3” on a Maxell tape. This American one-man battalion delivers six tracks of punishing Black Metal with Doom Metal influences. As we dusted off our tape player, this demo is quite well produced and will send shivers down your spine with its devastating riffs and demoralizing atmospheric passages.

Opening with “Beneath the White Mountains”, the Yith immediately punishes the listener with savage Black Metal riffs and vocals. The moment of awesomeness comes when the track mellows out a bit and atmospheric keyboards and a Doomy passages breaks through the cloud of BM onslaughts. “The Woman in Black” is a more ‘mellow’ track where the Black/Doom vibe is very well crafted and creates a very bleak landscape.

Closing side A of the tape we have “Forsaken” with a very emotional acoustic instrumental approach, a nice culmination for such an intense first half. “Centuries of Horror” continues the proceedings with a very think and cavernous atmosphere filled with powerful BM riffing and intense vocals. The band sounds like the newest Gorgoroth but with a mellower and Doom-ier side, making their sound very demoralizing and crushing. After another instrumental mood setting track with “The Revenant”, our favorite track comes up under the title “Sentinel of Hell”. This closing tune has a very distinct old-school Black Metal vibe that will rock you out of your chair mixed in with the band’s signature Doom-iness.

If you are looking for a no-bullshit Black Metal release with Doom Metal influences, look no further and pick up a copy of this excellent demo. Yith stays completely away from the whole Cascadian-hipster-Black Metal and yet manages to deliver a good mixture of melancholic and pushing elements. “Demo 3” is a very promising release and we can only hope that this one-man behemoth of a band only keeps improving with time.
