Fun at the Morgue – Massoula (2013)

cover

Today we have Fun at the Morgue, a Swiss band delivering their debut EP titled “Massoula”. Featuring 11 tracks, this makes it the EP with the most number of tracks we have every received. Filled with neck breaking Death Metal, this release provides a nice insight into the band’s crazy little world and showcases their musical abilities. While the majority of the release has pretty straightforward Death Metal tracks, there are a few songs here and there that make the experience a whole lot more interesting.

Opening with the commanding “Funeral Overture”, the band quickly establishes their power with their crushing riffing. This bleeds into “Faceripper” and “Heretic”, two short but sweet tracks filled with punishing guitars and thunderous drumming. The vocals are quite standard and very firm, as they should be in any DM release. “Dark Prophecy” is the longest song in this release clocking in at 4 minutes, and it has that Six Feet Under / Cannibal Corpse vibe thanks to the solid songwriting and attention to catchiness.

With 11 tracks in the CD and only 9 listed, we are a bit confused but we assume that after an empty 6 second track we assume that “Cadaveric Dead Bodied Slain Corpses Died The Dead Death Of Killing Doom” is next. With all the confusion, we can only make out that track 8 is “That’s the Way (I Like Inna-Gadda-da-vida)” since its riffing is very characteristic and everybody will surely pick up on it. Quite a cool track indeed since it is quite different from the first few songs.

Adding more confusion into the mix we have 3 songs left on the CD and only one on the track list… so we dare to say that track 9 is “Lobotomie”, a Social Disaster cover, and the remaining two tracks are just fillers. Overall we have to say that the release is quite short and repetitive at times, but Fun at the Morgue showcases some very cool passages here and there and an overall crushing sound. We did get a bit annoyed by the confusing track list, since their band camp indicates that the EP is only three songs, the CD back panel says 9 and the CD player said 11.  With a certain vibe from old-school Death Metal, Fun at the Morgue delivers very effective songwriting through this release, so keep an eye out for this band in the future.
