Deconstructing Sequence – Year One (2013)

cover

Pretentiously called Extreme Progressive Art, the statement is actually pretty darn close when it comes to describe the challenging music of Deconstructing Sequence on their debut EP “Year One”. Feturing three songs and over 23 minutes of Extreme Progressive Metal music, this duo delivers quite an intricate release filled with little nuisances that make it even more enjoyable after a couple of spins.

With a very ominous start to “Departure of the Stellar Fleet Marks the Year One” the band sets a very epic mood since the beginning. The keyboards reminded us of late 90’s bands (in particular Nile) giving a high atmospheric charge to the incisive guitars and crafty drumming. The growls are quite crushing and elevate the brutality of the music without obscuring the technical abilities lurking in the mist.

“Enmazed in White Heavenly Stronghold of the Cyberangel” delivers some awesome heavy progressive sections that nicely continue the flow of this release. With an intensity at some points similar to Akercocke and their furious sound, the band nicely transitions to more melodic passages that keep the songs fresh and mysterious on the first we listens.

The avant-garde weirdness appear on the track “Rediscovered Beauty of the Internal Evil”. A song that the band members took from their older band Northwall, but fits very nicely in the grand scheme of things presented in this EP. The band’s ability to switch between dense cavernous atmospheres into trippy passages is top notch and shows their great musical depth and creative composition skills.

Overall, “Year One” is one hell of an EP that lives up to the hype of the band’s PR materials. We particularly enjoyed how diverse and cohesive this release is, bringing in very traditional sounds with unconventional elements and sounding amazing in the process. If you are looking for something very well crafted and heavy, look no further and give Deconstructing Sequence a chance.
